The Nineth Day: 31 March 2020

The Nineth Day: 31 March 2020 (25,150 confirmed infected, 1,789 died, in total)

"The situation is going to get worse before it gets better - but it will get better." – Boris Johnson

The Prime Minister is still isolated and works in 11 Downing Street through videoconferences, where he gave his colleagues the above prediction.

Our family took a short walk as our daily exercise. About one fifth of pedestrians in the street wore face masks, while none of the shopkeepers did. This is really anxious, for the shops can become hubs and springboards for the virus to spread.

I saw an elderly couple buying two huge packs of bottled water and dragging them home – the tap water in London is very hard, generating plenty of scale. Most shops no longer provide door-to-door delivery service. It would not be a problem for youngsters, but for elders, it will. This is another example of how the virus made people’s life tougher.

According to the lockdown rules, restaurants are instructed to close their dine-in section, but allowed to keep takeaway and delivery services. However, most of the restaurants have closed entirely, with the rest gradually cutting their takeaway and delivery services, too.

Without doubt, things are still getting worse. People are eager for a “turning point”, just like Chinese locked-down cities were weeks ago. Media in UK became over-sensitive to figures showing a trace of “the line is flattening”. But we know, the point is still a bit away.
