The Fourth Day: 26 March 2020 (11,658 confirmed infected, 578 died, in total)

"All those who are out there making an unbelievable difference to our lives in these challenging times… bravo, you are amazing!" – “Clap for Our Carers” Campaign

There was a “small but big” event this 8 o’clock in the evening: the whole country gave a big applause to NHS and other frontline workers by clapping on each household’s doorstep, balcony, garden or front room. It was initiated and organized by a Dutch Londoner Annemarie Plas and got supports from many media.

At 8pm today, all our neighbours punctually appeared on the balconies or in front of their houses and clapped. Kids including my son drew some thank-you notes and waved them to the sky. Some blocks away there were even some guys setting off fireworks. People also shouted and whistled – from which I could hear not only gratitude and admiration, but also discharging their pressures and feelings after being “locked indoor” for four days.

This “Clap for Our Carers” event is said to be held every Thursday at 8 pm during the epidemic period. It may not ease the current situation, and may not give the NHS and other essential workers any physical aid, but it does warm people’s bosom and generate a cheer-up power. It is what humanism can do to help each one of us to strive and survive.
