The Seventh Day: 29 March 2020

The Seventh Day: 29 March 2020 (19,522 confirmed infected, 1,228 died, in total)

"Walking your dog in the Peak District is not essential." – Derbyshire Police

It is the first Sunday after the lockdown rules were put in effect. The weather is pretty nice with warm sunshine and spring breeze. People across UK choose to forget the daunting daily rocketing death tolls in Italy and Spain which are partially a consequence of being neglectful of the lockdown rules.

It is reported that today many Britons drove out to parks or even some tourist attractions like the Peak District to enjoy their Sunday, having gatherings and even picnics there. When police stopped them at the checkpoint, they gave an excuse of “we are going to the place for our daily exercise…” The lockdown rules of 23 March do say that for “one form of exercise a day” people are allowed to leave their home, but using this as an excuse to drive hundreds of miles away to “exercise” is obviously abusing and flouting the rules.

On social media we can see not merely a small number of people criticising the police. They argued “driving our own car to somewhere quiet to do exercise away from crowds, what harm did we do to society?” Well yes, a single individual may be lucky enough to stay healthy and not spreading the virus, but irregular frequent movements of many individuals will make tracking and cutting the spread of the virus impossible. That is how the society may be harmed, and that is also why China (in those most serious cities) has taken an even much more stringent approach to totally prohibit citizens from stepping out their houses for even one step.

We took a brief walk along the street outside our residential block. The community supermarket now accepts only one person from a family to enter the supermarket at one time, to control the number of customers inside the shop.

To avoid gathering of people, the church in the street suspended all its services albeit it is a brisk and warm Sunday. Foodbank is closed, too. Those in urgent need must go to another church miles away for their food. This might be another way the coronavirus killing people.
