Chapter 37

"What do we do?" Trayvon asked, seeing the chaos grow around us.

Keisha closed her eyes, concentrating as her voice rang out on the PA system. "Everyone, calm down and quickly exit the building. These are our enemies and we will handle this."

Callum looked over at Becky. "Can you-"

"I’m on it." Becky said, instantly creating two doubles of herself and the two ran to the door, ushering people out.

"What exactly is the plan though?" Erika asked cautiously. "I mean, what are we gonna do about this?"

"Do you know where the rest of the bombs are?" Callum asked as we started running towards the sound of the explosion.

"No, but, using common sense, if one set of bombs were in the store room, then there has to be another set, right?" I asked, struggling to keep up with Callum since he was slightly using his super speed. "Find the other set, find the doll, take them down."

"That sounds way too simple." Damian said, shaking his head.

"Simple, but it could work." Keisha said, her eyes glowing green as we ran. "Looks like there’s at least three more sets of bombs."

"Where are they?" Dad asked as he caught up with the rest of us, pulling out a small shotgun from his holster.

"Dad, I really don’t think-"

"They’re spread out on the four walls." Keisha interrupted. "The one closest to us was the one that went out."

"Okay. I’ll go check it out."

"Dad, wait." I said, grabbing Dad’s arm and forcing him to stop as everyone else ran ahead of us.

"Yeah honey?" Dad asked.

I had a sinking feeling that something bad was going to happen. I couldn’t tell what it was, but I knew, deep down, that this was going to be one of the last times I was going to see him before things changed. I smiled at him uneasily. "Promise me you’ll be careful, okay?"

Dad seemed to sense my unease since he just nodded sternly. "Only if you promise me the same thing."

I nodded. "I’ll be careful."

"And so will I." Dad said, walking away from me as he softly smiled. "I’ll see you after the attack is over."

Nodding, I ran to catch up to the rest of the group, who was just frozen in their spots as Damian stepped forward, walking towards Zelena and her group of friends. I walked up to Braylen, crossing my arms as I leaned towards him as Braylen gave me a concerned look, his voice lowering. "Now the betrayal?"

I nodded. "Now the betrayal."

"Where were you?" Trayvon whispered on the other side of me since I was standing between the two. "I thought we’d have to fight these guys without you!"

"I wanted to talk with my dad before everything went down." I said, staring at the group and shaking my head. Jill was holding a burlap doll, nothing visibly seen on the exterior, and hiding it horribly as she quietly spoke into it.

I leaned over to Braylen. "Think you can get the doll?"

"Not without raising suspicion."

"Damian, what are you doing?" Erika asked innocently, like she had no idea what was really going on.

"I’m sorry it had to be like this." Damian apologized, a cruel smile spreading across his chubby face. "You guys just got punked."

"Damian, come on." Callum said, walking forward and approaching Damian with extreme caution. "It doesn’t have to be like this."

Damian slowly walked forward, meeting Callum halfway and grabbed his hand. "I’m afraid it does."

He quickly punched Callum in the gut, causing Callum to collapse as he slid to the ground. Damian looked at all of us angrily as he put his foot on top of Callum’s body. "You heroes are so easy to trick! Getting into your ranks was way too easy! All I had to do was date this idiot and I was in! You’re all so gullible."

"Oh, that’s what he was going to say!" I muttered to myself. Becky looked over at me and gave me a questioning look from under her gold mask. "What? I only heard the first half of the first sentence originally! I didn’t know the second half!"

"Why aren’t they acting more surprised?" One of the guys asked from the edge of the formation, looking over at us and realizing that we weren’t looking as surprised as we should have.

Zelena cursed, not looking me in the eye. "It’s because they already knew! Anneliese has the premonition thing, remember?"

"That’s not going to be a problem." Jill said, looking over at Damian. "Now Damian, what exactly is their plan?"

"Grab the doll and get it to Becky."

"That’s it?" Gretchen asked, laughing a bit. "Well, this is going to be easy. They may as well consider it revenge for putting that stupid collar on me at this point."

"We got the plan?" Koda asked, getting ready to run at the people in front of us. Our classmates.

"Get the doll-" Erika started to say, grabbing some seeds out of her belt.

"And get it to Anna." Braylen finished.

"Let’s get that stupid doll." Becky said, making a couple more clones of herself as we all charged forward. Zelena’s team ran forward, ready to fight back as one of the guys started controlling fire beside him.

Callum rolled over, causing Damian to get thrown off balance. Callum swung his leg up, kicking Damian in the privates as he quickly got up and ran to join the rest of us. Becky and her clones started doing some gymnastics as she flipped into the other guy, the one who saw us downstairs in the archives of the Treatorian Collective. He tried to summon some water to get Becky to slip and fall on, but one of the other Becky clones grabbed his hands behind his back.

Gretchen walked towards me, smirking as she cracked her knuckles. "I have been waiting for this since that stupid interrogation."

"Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked, opening my hands and letting the lightning arc from my hands.

"I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life." Gretchen said, turning into a kangaroo and kicked me in the chest, kicking me into a stack of wooden boxes. I felt some splinters in my neck and pain in my chest as I got back up, shooting an arc of lightning at Gretchen. She dodged it, rolling away as she turned back into a human.

She ran towards me, throwing kicks in my direction as I blocked it with my arms. I missed one as she kicked me to the ground, trying to keep me pinned down. I grabbed her leg, causing her to fall down next to me. I got up, punching Gretchen in the stomach when she tried to get up. When she tried to get up, I summoned electricity and shocked the ground around her, causing her to pass out.

I quickly got up, looking around and noticing that Keisha was standing above everyone on a pile of boxes and scanning the fight. I looked in the direction, noticing that Jill was standing on the opposite stack of boxes. Keisha looked over at me, pointing to Jill. I sharply nodded, running in her direction.

Or, at least I was until someone scooped me up and we were running at lightning speed. I looked up and saw Callum carrying me bridal style. He seemed to see my confused expression because he smiled, yelling so that I could hear. "We need to get that doll somehow!"

I nodded as Callum did a miniature lap around the giant warehouse as he threw me up in the air. I started falling at a high speed until I hovered in the air. I looked down and saw Braylen hovering me in the air as I landed on the pyramid of wooden boxes. I saw Zelena approach Braylen, hands with twin balls of electricity. I quickly summoned a ball of electricity and threw it down to seperate them before I climbed up to where Jill was standing, talking into the doll. When she saw me, Jill spoke into the doll. "Damian, get up here and protect me."

"Jill, you don’t have to do this." I said, shaking my head. "Hand me the doll and I promise I won’t fight you."

"You won’t have to fight me." Jill said innocently. "You will have to fight him."

Damian came up behind me and got me in a stronghold by my neck. Feeling my breath leave my body, I struggled to get my hands up where Damian was choking me. Once at least one hand was there, I sent a shock through Damian’s body, causing him to crumple on the wooden box as I got out of his grasp and pushed him down to the ground below. I looked over at Jill, my ribs still in pain after the kangaroo kick from Gretchen. "Give me that doll, Jill."

Jill looked at me angrily. "Why, so you can just turn me in?"

"Why would I do that?"

"Because that’s what heroes do. You make one bad mistake, and it’s over. I didn’t even want to do this."

"Then why are you?" I asked, giving Jill a confused look. She turned away from me, closing her eyes tightly. I realized that she was trying her best not to cry.

"Herbstreit and Zelena threatened to hurt my family." Jill admitted quietly, her voice strained to the point that it was hard to hear her over the chaos below us. "They said that if I didn’t help them, they hurt my little brother and sister. I can’t be turned in. I’m all they have left since our parents died last year. I need to be around for them. I can't leave them with some stranger who hurts them if they don’t do everything they need them to."

"I’ll make you a deal." I said, sighing heavily. I understood how she felt about loss. I mean, I had seen pretty much everyone I cared about die from premonitions, but I also understood her desperation to save her family. I couldn't let her potentially go to jail and leave her sibilings go. "If you give me the doll and if you help make sure the other people are safe, I won’t let anyone take you away from your siblings."

"Do you really mean that?" Jill asked hesitantly.

"Don’t listen to her, Jill!" Zelena yelled from down below. "She’s just trying to trick you!"

"I promise." I said, seeing the doll slowly make its way towards me. "And I never break my promises."

Jill hesitated for a second before holding out the doll to me. "Take it."

"Thank you." I said, putting the doll in between my belt and jumpsuit.

Jill smiled at me, almost peacefully, but then one of the guys came up and punched her in the back. Jill screamed in pain as the kid picked her up, faster than I could react, and threw her down, back facing the ground. She hit the ground with a deafening crack. Blood was already pouring out of her backside. I turned to the guy, kicking him in the privates as he crumpled and fell onto the ground by himself. Becky, or one of her clones, I can’t tell, ran up to Jill and looked at me curiously. I yelled down, shellshocked at the sight of her blood. I guess this is how everyone else felt when I jumped in front of that bullet. "Take her outside! She needs medical attention!"

Becky nodded, scooping up Jill and running out of the building with her. Trayvon looked over at me, lifting his hands as metal sheets started to fly. I nodded, jumping on top of the metal sheets until I got to the second floor of the warehouse, which was mainly just catwalks, and I jumped on and crouched down, pulling out the doll and turning it over in my hands.

I studied the doll, feeling the energy source somewhere inside the doll, pulling out the knife Callum and Beth had given me, I don’t even know why they did, I don’t even know how to use a knife, and cut into the doll, feeling around the stuffing to find a small metal statue of some soldier. I felt energy coursing through it as I stuffed it into my pocket, falling through a cornered off section of the catwalk that had a hole in the ground, running over to see Damian slowly waking up and rubbing his head.

When I saw that he was up, I smiled happily, holding out my hand. "Damian!"

Damian gave me a confused look, backing away. "Who the hell are you!"

I remembered that Calvin didn’t remember anything from being controlled with the doll, but I didn’t think that Damian was under Jill’s control the entire time anyone besides Braylen knew him. I sighed heavily. "I’m your friend Braylen’s girlfriend."

Damian looked me up and down, nodding approvingly. "Damn Braylen. How did your dorky ass get this as a girlfriend?"

That gave me pause. The one that was controlled didn't nearly have this... Perverted of a personality. I took in a sharp breath, scared of the answer. "You’re not actually gay, are you?"

"What? NO! I’m bisexual. Why?"

"I can explain later, but can you fight?"

"Yeah, but I usually use a sword, or-"

"Will a knife do?" I asked, grabbing my knife out of my hilt on my leg. I offered the hilt to Damian.

"Knife will work." Damian said, grabbing the knife and standing back up as he looked at the chaos behind us.

"You see the people in hoodies and normal clothes?"

"Yeah."

"They’re the bad guys. People who are dressed like us are good guys."

Damian looked down at what he was wearing. "How did I get into this? Wait… What month is this?"

"Close to the end of October. Braylen and I will explain everything later, but right now, you need to fight."

Damian nodded uneasily. "Okay… What do I call you?"

I hesitated, weighing the risks of the situation. "Anneliese, but most people call me Anna."

"I’ll see you on the other side then, Anneliese?"

I nodded. "On the other side."

Damian nodded, running into the chaos with a confused expression on his face. As soon as he was in the battle, I saw red lightning arc across the ceiling. Remembering my premonition, my eyes widened as I ran after the red lightning. "DAD!"
