Chapter Three

The head camp counsellor, Steve Christy, 29, was nervous. He had a scarf across his thin neck. His white colored eyes belied a sense of concern that was unfounded; his blonde hair was cut a day before; his moustache gave him an air of authority. In his right hand was an axe, for chopping the oak trees. 'Well, can you help me?', Steve asked them. 'Sure', Jack answered. Ned frowned. 'And I thought we wouldn't be working immediately', he sighed.

The tree crashed down, and the work was about to begin at Camp Crystal Lake.

***

The door to cabin 4 was open.

Alice Hardy, the Assistant Camp Counsellor, smiled.

'Hi. I'm Alice'.

'Hi. I'm Jack Burrell'.

'Hi, I'm Marcie Stanler'.

'Hi. I'm Ned Rubenstein'.

'Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake. The safest camp in New Jersey', Alice said.

'Is it?', Ned asked her.

'I hope so', Alice answered.

And they smiled, as they put their bags in cabins 3, and 5.

***

'Where's Bill?', Steve asked Alice.

'Painting', Alice answered him.

'No, I'd rather him paint. Where's Brenda?'.

'At the Archery range', Alice said.

Steve sighed, and knew that the campers weren't getting along, as he had had hoped.

Alice knew that Camp Crystal Lake wasn't as fun as she'd imagined.

***

Alice saw Bill.

'Steve wants Brenda to paint'.

'The paint thinner is bad, but okay. Do you think we'd last all day?'.

'I don't think we'd last all week', Alice laughed.

And, as she ran through the dim, wet, woods, she had had a feeling of dread that she was being watched.

***

Steve heard the sound of banging nails in the cabins.

Alice was smiling at him.

He saw her drawings.

'Did we make out in bed...', he asked her.

'We did last night', Alice answerd.

'What's the matter?'.

'Oh, it's just some family business back in California', Alice said.

'Oh, any kind of problem?'.

'It's fine, Steve', Alice said.

'But...Can you please stay a week, If, by next Friday, you don't like it here, I'll pay for the bus ticket myself'.

'Okay, I'll stay, Steve'.

'Thanks, Alice'.

Alice nodded, and their romantic talk was over.

***

Steve was in the Jeep.

'I should be back by the afternoon, If Annie arrives, I want her in working in the kitchen with Brenda. There's a storm tonight, and I got to hurry with business that needs addressing. There's food and drinks in the kitchen fridge. I don't want to be late. Have a great time. Good bye'. By Midday, the campers decided to go swimming. Ned flailed in the deep water. 'Help me! Help me!'. Jack performed CPR. Ned expelled water out of his lungs; his prank didn't work. In the woods, someone was watching them. 'Hey, there's a creep watching us', Brenda said. 'Like who?', Marcie asked her friend.

'I don't know', Brenda answered.

But, according to her, she was scared.

***

In the kitchen, Brenda sighed.

'Ned's silly'.

'I know. He love you', Alice smiled.

'I know', Brenda smiled, as they did the dishes in the kitchen.
