I could finally open my eyes, and I saw I was standing on a queue a very long
one I couldn't
even see the beginning, I saw I was standing on a queue, a very long one and I
couldn't see the
beginning, I saw I was the last but I didn't see anyone I knew. Worse part,
everyone was smiling
while I was freaking out. Stepping out of the line, I began to
look for someone familiar but I
couldn't so I opted to ask anyone from the line.
"Uhm excuse me, what is the line for?" I asked the old lady in front of me, if
she heard me she
didn't show any signs, she kept smiling. Maybe she was having trouble hearing.
I moved to the
next person, a young man, smiling like the rest.
"Pardon me, what is this line for?" Again no response. Finally I saw a guy
probably around my
age walking around the place with a neutral expression, I walked up to him.
"Hey, please excuse me, where is this place?" I asked. He looked at me
surprised, with mouth
agape and all.
"Uhm hello" I said waving my arms in his face.
Still in shock, I grunted and began my hunt for another normal person. Suddenly
red lights were
blaring overhead, panicking I began looking for a place to run to, while the
people on the line kept
on their facade of smiling. The guy I saw earlier with the neutral expression
came to my direction,
I smiled at least someone wanted to get out of here.
"Come with me" He said when he reached me.
"You know how to get out of here?" I asked, in response he simply dragged me
out of the
queuing room. We passed a couple of doors, the alarms stopped blaring, and we
walked quickly,
and in silence. I didn't mind as long as we left that room.
"My name is Candace" I said breaking the silence.
He simply looked at me and looked forward.
"Rude" I said.
"Alma" He grumbled out. A Latin name I thought.
Finally we arrived at a big black oak door with 'Conference hall' inscribed on
it. Nervously I peeked
at Alma, he seemed confident so I relaxed a bit.
"I got the girl" He spoke into his earpiece. Something I had obviously missed when I looked at him for the first time, disappointed in myself for not being observant enough, I cursed in Latin.
My eyes widened as I thought of my stupidity, he must have been working with
them of course,
trying to figure out how to outrun him, he is taller and has longer legs he
will probably catch me,
still risking it I decided to take my chances, as if sensing my escape plans
Alma held me tighter , I
scowled at him. Just then the doors slowly creaked open. And he dragged me into
the room, it
was so bright I had to shield my eyes adjusted and what I saw left me entirely
speechless.
My family were really religious, I was too but not the most religious, I
believed in God, his
angels and everything. But I never thought I'd see angels real life. Angels
with real wings, Halo,
white garments complete with the glow.
"This must be quite the Halloween party don't you think?" I broke the silence
"But isn't it too early for Halloween? Even though, I must commend you all, you
put on quite a
show.. very entertaining, it looks so real, I was almost fooled" I nodded
approvingly.
They shared an alarmed look..and a little amazement. Finally one, I think he is
the leader..
sitting on the highest chair and everything. He asked,
Young child, what is your name?"
"Candace Talker" gasps filled the room, leaving me even more confused.
I wondered if they hadn't heard the name before..I think it was a common name.
"How old are you?" He continued.
"I'd be twenty this year" I answered. I didn't know why I answered to them. I'm
the one they
kidnapped.
"Why am I here?"
They looked amongst themselves, as if debating whether to answering me was the
best. I
rolled my eyes, they kidnapped me, they should at least tell me whether the
ransom was payable
or not. They are supposed to at least tell me why I was interrupting their
freak show.
"You are here because you are dead" one answered
One minute of silence. Two minutes. Three minutes.
I burst out laughing, I laughed so hard tears pricked the corners of my eyes.
Looking back at them, they looked so serious. I began to sweat.
"How?" I croaked out.
Alma - I had almost forgotten he was there too. He stretched his hand out and
pressed some
buttons on this cool TV like thing, and a clip played out, in it two girls were
crossing the road, I
recognized them, it was Paige and I. We were hit by this really big, fast
moving truck, and the
video ended.
Sweat began dripping down my forehead, my life was really over, just like the
clip..it had
ended abruptly. I didn't get to graduate college, or get married, or have kids,
heck I didn't see my
parents for the last time.
I started hyperventilating, that's when I noticed crusted blood on my
forehead. The flood
gates were open and the water works broke out. Then I realized I
was technically mourning
myself, then I laughed, then cried, and laughed some more.
I vaguely heard the Angels tell Alma to take me up to one of the rooms, so I
wouldn't cause
commotion.
Alma gently led me to the room, all the while drawing soothing circles on my
back.
Finally we got to the room, it was not decorated, meaning they weren't
expecting me so soon.
"Get some rest" Alma said as he left.
I sat on the bed with my head in my hand, with only one thing on my mind if I
still had one.
"You are here because you are dead".
