Chapter 3

Jenny was already very late. She had coffee and a sandwich on the way from Liam's house. Headaches become better after eating something.

She only had 15 minutes to get ready and join her duties. She took five minutes to shower and another five to get ready. She was running from the quarter at the last five minutes and finally reached the hospital area.

She was panting when a colleague of her saw her. "That's why you need to come early or else you have to run like a mad man."

"What's my duty today?"

"Children ward. Time for their medicines but I am sure they didn't even have their breakfast properly yet." her colleague said and walked away.

"Children ward. Exactly what I need right now to forget everything." Jenny murmured and put on a big smile.

She walked towards the children ward and looked through the glass. As her colleague said, they were running around with their parents and nurses behind them, refusing to finish their breakfast.

Jenny thought for a while and went for her locker. Her patients call her locker a treasure box. It always had something to convince her tantrum specialist patients, the ones that were thrown at her to make her job harder.

She pull out few packets from her locker and locked it. She went back to the Children Ward looking shocked.

"Oh my God!" She shouted and everything stopped. The kids were no longer running and looked at each other.

"I thought I will give you these candies after you take your medicines but I think you don't need them." Jenny said waving the packets. The kids widen their eyes and looked at each other as if saying, 'Those candies should not leave this room'.

"We were finishing." A little boy said making an innocent face, others followed him and nodded.

"So, you need this?" Jenny asked and waved candy packets.

All of them nodded silently.

"Then go back to your beds and finish it. Go go."

They ran towards their beds and their parents/ nurse continued feeding them. But the most difficult time was to give them the medicines.

They absolutely hated medicine. She was going bed to bed and only gave candy after their medicines.

" I don't want to take it." a little girl said with a pout.

"I can't give you candy if you don't, sweetheart."

"Then I don't want candy."

Jenny stopped herself from laughing out loud and gave a tight lipped smile. 'Kids these days!' she thought.

"Really? But you should do everything your doctor tell you to do."

"Why?"

"Because you are a princess and princess never argue with their doctor." Jenny said and that little girl made an 'Ooo' face.

"I am a princess?"

"Yes, you are mummy's and Papa's princess." The mother of the little girl said and ruffled her hair.

"I too have a prince?"

"Yes. When you will be grown up like me, you will find your prince." Jenny said with a smile.

"Did you find yours?" The girl asked innocently.

That question triggered her memory with Liam. She used to tease Liam when he would be angry with her, "Liam, my prince".

Liam used to get so irritated by that prince nonsense and he had to forgive her and become normal.

Jenny gave another tight smile to the little girl, "I did. Now take this medicine and I will give you a candy."

The little girl swallowed her medicines with a yuck face. Jenny laughed and gave her a candy.

Jenny had to persuade every kid to take medicines. She even had to tell all of them a story or else they would not leave her. She had fun and that's the only reason why most of her colleagues stay away from that ward but she on the other hand became excited whenever her duty was there. That's probably everyday!

She had to listen to everyone's complain. Who didn't play with, who attacked another, who snatched chocolates, all the innocent complains were given to her and she was dying to smile but she had to look serious. With a frown and pointing stare she tried to solve every problems.

"Do you want others to call you bad boy?" Jenny asked the little boy who literally fought with everyone.

He shook his head silently saying 'no'. "Then you can't fight with others. They are your friends, right? And you don't fight with your friends."

After checking everyone's reports and adding things on them, she was tired but content. Kids are always a good distraction from the problems of life.

She was feeling good after such awful morning and went to the room that all the interns share. She was about to sit down in front of her desk when another intern came through the door, searching something and panicking.

His eyes fell on Jenny and he came towards her. "You are here, I was looking for you. You need to attend an emergency surgery. Run to OT4, fast."

Jenny didn't wait any longer and ran towards OT4. She entered in a room that was close to the OT to get ready for the surgery. Doctors can't just go inside without following any procedure.

She was not ready. She didn't want to attend any operation that day. She was feeling okay after a lot of hassle then the surgery. She absolutely hated emergency surgeries because most of the patients die during it or after it.

When she was ready she ran inside of the OT and saw the doctors already started. She joined the team and started doing what the senior doctor instructed her to do.

It was a accident patient with heavily injured head. They were trying their best to save him. Jenny was cleaning a wound near his stomach when he started to breathe heavily.

The senior doctor started barking instructions and all of them rushing to do it. Every second counted in emergencies like that. After a whole silent chaos and injections, the patient became still.

Heart monitor was beeping loudly and showed the flat line. But the doctors didn't stop, they had another chance left, to electrify the patient three times and bring his heartbeat back.

After the third attempt the monitor didn't show any progress. All the chaos stopped. Doctors sighed with defeated looks. They didn't need to hear anything to know what just happen but to maintain the rules, The senior doctor announced blankly,

"We lost him."
