Chapter 2 The Last Mutant

Bela & I traveled about a day out into the wilderness, on the fringe of the Green Mutants conglomeration and adjacent to the Purple mutants who trailed behind the greens, not in subservience, but it was just the time that they had left the park in that particular order. An impressively large purple mutant who introduced himself as Zoe, made his acquaintance to Bela and I, and then hurried the rest of the Purples along, passing the Green Mutants and rapidly overtaking the Yellows. Soon the purples were far ahead and well out of sight. I learned from the other Greens that we would be making camp soon, all of the mutants sharing their misery, or so I thought at the time/

The sun was just setting as we arrived at the center of camp. A large purple mutant that I recognized as Zoe, was standing on a stump clapping his hands together in an attempt to gain the attention of the crowd. He spoke in a loud clear voice.

"Fellow mutants. I am Zoe. One moment of your time please." Zoe's lizard-like eyes scanned the crowd, giving the effect that he was addressing each & every mutant individually. He had a look of immense pride on his scale covered face, which broke into a huge & friendly smile, revealing two rows of needle-sharp teeth. Several mutants were still talking in the crowd. Zoe raised both hands in the air. He seemed to command every one's attention. Quiet enveloped the crowd

"Fellow mutants. I am pleased to be a part of such a diverse group of honorable colleagues, like those who are present today. I believe we are gathered here with a common purpose. That purpose is self preservation. All are aware of the atrocities committed by the mirror people against mutant-kind. I know all of you have been cast out of the cities you lived in & loved. Most of you have lost everything dear to your heart, & are harboring a deep hatred towards the mirror people."

Zoe, ever the great orator, seemed to know that now was the time to pause for dramatic effect,..bring questions & emotions to the collective minds of his audience. A murmur of agreement swept through the crowd. That murmur seemed to be precisely what Zoe was awaiting.

He took a deep breath,.. & once again addressed the crowd. "Fellow mutants. We do not deserve this abominable treatment. I am of the opinion that we should take back what is ours by force. Yes,..our nemesis, the mirror people are bound to be a thorn in our side forever. We have a big problem here today. That problem is lack of leadership. We need someone at the helm, who is capable of leading us through these trying times that are certain to come. Fellow mutants,..I am that leader."

At that point, two other purple mutants, a tall & short one stepped up to the stump, & turned to face the crowd. "I, Jad of the purple mutants hereby nominate Zoe as the leader of the mutants." Then the shorter of the tow mutants said, "I Medd,..of the purple mutants, second the nomination.

Several mutants in the front row, mostly purples; voiced their approvals and an affirmative cry swept through the crowd. Against the background of the bonfire, several mutants could be seen dancing in a frenzy, as Zoe stuck out his chest; in an aggressive stance, & placed both hands on his hips. At that exact moment, the moon rose from behind a cloud encircling Zoe's head much like a halo. Another murmur passed through the crowd, as all appeared to accept Zoe's leadership as divine providence. A chant; being initiated by Zoe's two trusty assistants, originating with only their two voices,..then picked up by more & more people in the crowd,... slowly rising in decibels into a roaring crescendo. "Go with Zoe, kill our foe. Go With Zoe. Kill Our Foe. GO WITH ZOE. KILL OUR FOE!
