Chapter 12

I gritted my teeth, endured the pain in my feet, and limped out.

"Ouch, my head hurts! It hurts so much!" Lauren deliberately fell on the bed and shouted, but I didn't pause.

"Hey, your mother is crying out for pain!" A patient's family member stopped me and pointed in Lauren's direction.

"That's not my mother," I said seriously.

The person made way awkwardly, and Lauren shouted anxiously again, "Quick! Stop her! She caused me to fall, and I have a concussion now. She wants to run so that she doesn't have to compensate me!"

Lauren dressed plainly, looking like a woman from a small town, and people believed her words. Several righteous men came over and surrounded me.

"Look at you, all dressed up. Why are you so vicious?"

"You want to run after hitting someone? As you wish!"

I was speechless.

They looked at me with disgust, as if I had done something heinous.

At this moment, I didn't even want to explain and took out my phone to call the police.

"What are you gonna do?" A young man rushed up and slapped my phone to the ground. The screen instantly shattered.

"Let me tell you, if you don't pay the old lady today, you won't be able to leave the hospital!" He didn't feel ashamed of breaking my phone at all. Instead, he threatened me fiercely.

He reeked of alcohol, so when he opened his mouth, I couldn't help but step back.

I was especially aggrieved and wanted to cry, but due to my strong self-esteem, I forced back the tears that had welled up in my eyes.

"I'll just say this once!" I tried to calm down, but my voice trembled uncontrollably. "She fell down herself. I have nothing to do with it. I took her to the hospital because I was kind. If you want to stand up for her, it's okay. Pay me back the medical expenses I paid for her first. Then we'll go to the police station and see how the person breaking my phone for no reason will be punished."

When the others heard this, they wavered except for the young man who had slapped my phone to the ground. He now stepped hard on it and even ran over it twice.

"Drop the act! Bitch! I don't hit woman, but that doesn't mean I can do nothing about you!" After he finished speaking, he raised his hand to slap me across the face.

Normally, I would have dodged, but I had sprained my ankle seriously, so I only took a small step to the side, and his hand brushed my side face. The slap was so hard that my head tilted.

This was the first time I had ever been slapped, for no reason, and by a total stranger.

My ears buzzed. I didn't know if it was because of his slap or because of the extreme anger I was feeling.

While I was in a trance, he snatched my purse.

I watched him open it, take out my wallet, and take out all the cash.

"That's all the cash you've got?" He counted it, seemingly dissatisfied.

"What you are doing now is called 'robbery'." It took me a long time to regain my senses. "Everyone here can prove it. You'd better give me back my things, or I'll sue you and you will go to jail."

"Sue me if you can! I'd like to see who dares to put me in jail!" The man smiled smugly and threw my purse on the ground like garbage. The lipstick and foundation inside rolled everywhere.

"Pay the money and leave, or else..." He stopped smiling and glared.

"Or what?" A cold and unhappy voice sounded behind him. I looked over in surprise and delight and saw Aaron walking toward me with a calm face.

At this moment, I was no longer as strong as a minute ago. Feeling a lump in my throat, I looked at him and cried out, "Aaron..."

Aaron's eyes narrowed menacingly. He scurried to me, held me in his arms, and stroked my head twice.

"Who bullied you?" He asked me in a low voice. I grew more aggrieved by his gentle tone.

I wrapped my arms around his waist and put my face on his chest, crying out of breath.

"I did it. So what?" The young man said proudly. "This bitch hit someone and wanted to run away without paying for the damages. Now that I was here, I won't let such a bad thing happen!"

"Where's the evidence?" Aaron asked. "Did you see my girlfriend hit with your own eyes?"

"The old lady who was hit is over there. She said she was hit by this b*tch!" The young man pointed at Lauren.

"I didn't..." I looked up and explained in a low voice. "She fell down on her own..."

"I know you didn't. I trust you." Aaron smiled faintly. In his eyes, I saw nothing but trust.

I didn't know him very well, but he chose to be on my side and trust my words... I suddenly felt deeply moved and held him even tighter.

"Are you Amy's..." Somehow, Lauren had come near us and was standing beside us.

The way everyone looked at Aaron and me changed again.

The smile on Aaron's face was a little creepy.

Lauren didn't seem to notice his displeasure and questioned me in front of everyone, "Are you divorcing Jacob because of this man?"

"No!" I replied. "I divorced your son because he made his subordinate pregnant."

Since Lauren wanted everyone to know about the skeleton in the cupboard, I would do as she wished.

"How do we know you aren't lying? Maybe you hooked up with this man before the divorce!" Lauren was really good at distorting facts.

"Or we can swear that whoever lies will be hit by a car, okay?" I stared at Lauren frankly.

As expected, Lauren got cold feet and hummed and hawed, giving no definite reply.

"Then is it true that you wanted to run away after you caused me to have a concussion?" After failing to slander me for cheating, she framed me for causing her to fall and asked me to pay.

"The diagnosis is here." I let go of Aaron, bent down to pick up my purse thrown on the ground, and took out the examination report from it.

"You have no concussion at all." I read out the results word by word clearly. "As for whether I caused you to fall or not, we can check the surveillance cameras at the entrance of the TV station and asked the witnesses. You can confront me at any time."

Lauren opened her mouth and before she could say anything, Aaron said, "If it turns out that Amy didn't cause you to fall, wait to be subpoenaed."

"And you," He turned to the young man and said, "Sometimes you have to pay the price for fighting injustice."
