Encounter

The clouds went grey and rain started to fall as the hulking creature roared from a distance, I was petrified by sight.

The beast stood around 10 feet tall, his arms and legs were thick as lamp posts due to the abnormal muscular growth on his body. His thick abdominal muscles formed an armour as it was covered in scars and lesions. There was an open wound on his abdomen, perhaps caused by the fight with the personnel of the North Outpost.

Corporal Moore ordered his squad to fire on the hulking creature. However, the beast remained unfazed by the hail of bullets coming from the barrage of gunfire. It walked towards Corporal Moore’s position. The second squad led by Corporal Prater came to their rescue as they fired their guns towards the creature. However, Lieutenant Ballard remained shocked and stood motionless as her men fought to hold their ground.

I rushed towards Lieutenant Ballard, hoping that she would see some sense that fighting this beast is a terrible idea.

“Lieutenant! Fighting that beast is a terrible idea!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, as gunfire echoed around us. “We must retreat!

Lieutenant Ballard came back to her senses as she blinked and realized the pandemonium that is currently occurring, she nodded towards me as she reached for her radio.

“Lieutenant! Horde inbound at 6 o’clock!” Sergeant Retuerma exclaimed as the remaining five men turned around to see a rabid horde approaching. The gunshots and explosions perhaps attracted their attention along with the stench of flesh torn eaten by this beast. One of the infected beings managed to go around and lunge towards Private Laminers. I was able to set my sights on it and shot it dead before it got Private Laminers. Blood splattered as the rabid being fell down dead.

“Thanks.” Private Laminers said,

I just nodded as I kept shooting some of the infected beings. As I fired my last round, I reloaded my weapon, on the other side, men were falling down as the hulking beast tore Corporal Moore and Prater’s men. Realizing this would be a losing battle and time is of the essence, I came to Lieutenant Ballard for a suggestion.

“We must take down that beast! I have a plan, do you trust me?” I asked as I looked towards Lt. Ballard,

“Okay, Jack. What is your plan?” she replied as she shot one of the infected beings,

“First, I would need your grenades. Then, I’ll be using one of those trucks to take down that beast.” I replied, “I’ll be needing you to give me covering fire.

“That’s a suicide mission, civilian.” Lieutenant Ballard argued, “I cannot afford to take civilian casualties.

“Well think of me as a mercenary then,” I replied, “Besides, either this or we would die of scaphism.

“He’s right Lieutenant, we don’t have much time.” Sergeant Retuerma replied,

“Reloading!” Private Laminers exclaimed, “This is my last mag, Lieutenant!

Lieutenant Ballard reluctantly agreed, Sergeant Retuerma gave me a belt filled with grenades as Private Laminers and his team provided covering fire.

“Here Lieutenant, you’ll need this more than I do.” I smirked as I gave her my rifle and the gun belt with ammunition, “Don’t get any ideas with it ma’am. I’ll come back for it.

“Go! Go! Go!” Lieutenant Ballard ordered as she fired her gun to an infected. “Provide covering fire!

I rushed towards one of the trucks, the infected swarmed over me like locusts on old films, I fired my pistol on every infected being that came near me. Lieutenant’s men started to fire more accurate shots as less infected beings came close to me. After sprinting for quite a distance, I reached one of the trucks, and I immediately embarked on it. I was relieved when I found the keys still in the ignition, it would be a mission failure should those keys weren’t there. As soon as everything was on set, I started the truck, manoeuvred over and positioned myself towards the ravaging beast. Everything must be done perfectly, the car should ram against the hulking beast, driving it away as possible from the soldiers fighting it. The detonation delay of the grenades should cover the said time with it. I would need to accelerate and reach 96 kilometres per hour, considering that it was a short distance, this was a risky move.

As soon as I was in the position I slammed the accelerator, the truck was of a manual transmission, so the timing of shifting the gears is essential. As soon as it managed to reach higher revolutions per minute, I immediately turned to second gear, I must maintain the speed to ram the beast away. Some of the infected kept dashing over the front, hoping to stop or even slow down the vehicle. It was very pointless as I was reaching 80 kilometres per hour.

I can clearly see the beast as the distance between us shortened, it was tearing the soldiers apart. Their numbers were dwindling as I drove the truck towards the hulking beast. Some of the soldiers saw me coming as they signalled their comrades to get away from me, they all ran away and rushed towards Lieutenant Ballard’s position. As I grew closer to the hulking beast, I took the grenade belt I had from Sergeant Retuerma. I pulled all the pins in the grenade and placed it underneath the driver’s seat. I opened the door and bailed out at the last minute before the truck rammed the beast towards the wall of abandoned cars. The idea was to ram the vehicle towards the creature and use the vehicle as a bomb. I do hope this would kill the beast, if it doesn’t Lieutenant Ballard’s men are finished.

As I landed over the ground, I kept rolling until I was able to gain control and stopped. I managed to stand as the beast was still pinned on the truck. It struggled to push the car out of its way when in all of a sudden. A loud explosion occurred, the flash blinded me as the deafening sound of the blast shook me, fragments of the truck turned to be shrapnels as it flew around. It was a bad position to be in, I was very near to the explosion. Suddenly, I felt a numbing pain around my head, I felt dizzy and passed out.

I never knew what happened after that.
