‘I don’t remember coming here’ Saudah wondered, turning again towards the mud huts. A thick forest surrounded the place, its lifeless trees making ominous shapes in the deepening dark. This was no place of comfort. A sense of forbidding clutched at her chest. Suddenly, she saw a man on horseback, galloping towards her down a narrow path cut through the woods. She stood transfixed, unable to do anything but watch and wait.

The man was wearing a deep dark robe, very unlike the dress worn by human beings. On his feet were pointed nails. A dark, hooded cloak flapped wildly as he drew nearer on his black steed, his piercing eyes glaring at Saudah. He drew the horse up to a walk, never averting his eyes from hers. They were the scary steel-dark eyes she had never seen before, which seemed to beckon her against her will.

“What do you want?” Saudah screamed, her voice shrill with terror. “What do you want from me?” she screamed again. Something magnetic then pulled her towards the man; it was an invisible hand that pushed her from behind.

“No!” she screamed, wrestling with a creature she could not see. “Let me go!” she struck it, and it shrank back in the shadows. She then saw the man dismounting the steed, heading straight for her. The same invisible hand returned to grab her arms and propel her towards the horrible man, who feels her down and made love to her, the orgasmic pleasure of which she felt as she struggled to resist the act.

“No! No! No!” she cried out, her strength waning, and suddenly she was awakened to the horror of a frightening dream. She looked around the room; there was no man, no forest, no horse. Only darkness of the room and the thumping of her own heart. A chilly city breeze played with the crisp yellow curtains that framed her room window. Panting and soaked with sweat, Saudah groped around the bed for familiar objects.

Saudah rubbed the sleep from her eyes and groped her phone she found. Pressing it, she checked the time. It was six-fifteen. She had only been asleep for thirty minutes after her morning prayers. She then yawned loudly, covering her mouth with her hand and sat briefly at the edge of the bed before she stood up and sauntered out of her room into the bathroom.

Today is the D-day, she thought as she filled the bath with hot water. She’s going to forget the dream she just had and get ready. Nothing will be allowed to ruin the day for her, she promised.

“Yaya Saudah, are you ready? We are almost late fa, you need to hurry up. It is your day and you’re still going to be late!” a voice shouted outside Saudah’s room.

‘Alas! The d-day is here’ Saudah thought happily as she hummed to the Korean song playing on her phone. She still couldn’t bring herself to believe that the day is already here, the day she had been dreaming of for the past four years….becoming a graduate. She smiled brightly as she put on the last accessory she was holding, her earrings.

But then, she heard it. The sound she had been hearing since she arrived home yesterday evening. It was more like a purr and she couldn’t make out where the sound was coming from.

Suddenly, there were flashes of the dream she had yesterday nights. It was a weird dream, thou that was not the first time she had dreamt of cats, snakes, scorpions, large oceans, dark forests, and uncompleted buildings. But the dream she had this morning was a little bit different from the dreams she had been having for the past two years, yesterday she saw an image, or to make it clear, she saw a man, very scary if she might add, and that man-made love to her in the dream she had this morning.

She quickly dispatched the thought she was having and stood up, adjusting the veil she had wrapped, Saudah gave herself one last look at the mirror before smiling. But then, someone also smiled in the mirror at her. Saudah quickly turned and looked behind her, but no one was there. But why does it feel like someone smiled at her from the mirror? Or was her imagination getting the better of her? Dismissing the thought, she picked her black bag and looked at the mirror one last time before leaving the room.

One step at a time, she mused to herself as she stepped down the steps to the large living room slowly. The living room was adorned with two sets of chairs, colored in ash and a center carpet which was in the middle of the living room was milk in color.

“Is this my Saudah?” she heard her mom’s voice whispering behind her.

Saudah turned slowly and came face to face with her mom, who was a little bit shorter than her. “ummiNah” Saudah said slowly, as she looked at her mum all over. Who was dressed in a purple less of loose boubou gown, her medicated glasses adding more beauty to her mum’s slim face, “you look amazing.

“So do you princess,” her mum replied “congratulations princess. You’ve always made me proud. May Allah bless you and give a good husband who is worthy of your life.

“Amiin UmmiNah,” Saudah replied.

Her mum engulfed her in a warm hug and Saudah suddenly felt cold chills running down her spine. What the hell was that? She quickly let go of her mum and turned around the living room, her body already shaking as fear gripped her heart.

“Are you okay?” her mum asked, looking at her closely.

“Didn’t you hear my name being whispered when we hugged? It felt as if I was hugging someone else and not you, the hug was so cold and disturbing'' She replied, trying to avoid her mum’s gaze.

“Whatever do you mean by that? Are you trying to scare me or what?

But Saudah wasn’t listening to her mum. Her gaze was focused on the window behind them. She could now clearly see him, the man she saw in her dreams yesterday. But today, as she looked at him more closely, she noticed that he was handsome and not as scary as she thought he was this morning. She stood there like a statue, watching him. It did the same, looking at her with so much intensity she couldn’t handle. From where it was standing, the figure whispered words she was sure she was the only one that heard them.

“You shall finally be my wife, I’ve waited all these years for you. And now that you’re ready, I intend to make you mine. I shall take custody of your soul and also take possession of your body; I shall dwell in you and make your body my new habitation; so that you may live your entire life for the Satan, our great master.” The invisible figure said as he looked at her with an aura of confidence.

She looked on and watched as the invisible figure vanished right before her eyes. The cold chills were back, and she slowly slumped into darkness. She laid on the floor unconscious.
