Chapter 2

" The human brain, a network of 86 billion neurons, the most intricate system of data transfer and processing. Despite all the technological advancements, we still cannot fully comprehend even the basic functioning of this system..."

Professor Howard Patrick was addressing the new batch of students at the National Institute of Neuroscience.

" Let me tell you about the most interesting case I had to encounter in my career. It may even be one of the most baffling cases in the medical history.", the Professor smiled.

" It was around 12 years ago when I was still a practitioner at the City Hospital. I was the head of the department of neurology. A young man, a pizza delivery boy had met with a road accident. He had sustained an injury on his head. When he was brought in, he was just unconscious. Dr. Mathew O'Connell, a dear colleague of mine, was his doctor then. A scan of the brain showed no internal injuries, but there was significant damage to his nerves. I was called to confirm his doubts. We were expecting retrograde amnesia, sensory disabilities, and even that the patient would go into a coma. But none of that happened, and what happened was just extraordinary."

"The young man woke up fine with only a temporary loss of vision. As you all know, it's quite common after a head trauma. The hospital had recorded his name as Jacob Gerald from his possessions, but when asked he told us his name was Alex Jason, and that he was a police officer from 78th division. All that while whenever he was regaining his consciousness, he was murmuring about a murder, some girl, a phone call... and none of it made any sense. The police too confirmed that there was no Alex Jason in service in at 78th division. ."

"Everything started to make sense once I decided to go through his possessions. There were a few books, all about crimes and investigations, and then there was also a bundle of papers, which were misunderstood as some college assignment."

" Our young delivery boy was an aspiring writer. That bundle of papers was a story that he was writing. A crime thriller, where the protagonist Officer Alex Jason was framed for the murder of his girlfriend, Amanda Collins. It must have been a story he was so obsessed with, that when the accident happened and when his neural system was affected, that story in his subconsciousness, that world he had created, swapped in as his memory. Alex Jason became his identity, and the story, his memory. "

" That idea was so deeply rooted in his memory that, to this day, he's under medical supervision. We've made several unsuccessful attempts to pull him out of his fantasy. He believes he's being held like that for the murder of his girlfriend. It's an unusual case of delusion and paranoia.", Concluded the professor. "Here's a presentation with key details of the case, excerpts from the interview of Jacob Gerald aka Alex Jason, his books, the story he's living now...", Howard scrolled through his presentation.

"Professor, I've got a question." said a voice from the crowd.

"Yes, absolutely. Do ask", encouraged the professor.

"Is there any specific reason as to why Jacob was writing about that particular incident." asked the student.

Howard was confused, "I'm sorry I'm not exactly following what you're saying. What particular incident?"

"Sir, the murder of that actress in the 1980s, her boyfriend, a police officer was arrested for the same. Then also there was a conspiracy about a mystery killer. I thought Jacob's story has based that incident."

"Oh, is it? I'm sorry. I'm not aware of that incident. I've never been that much into movies anyway...", said the professor with a smile. "Anyway that is all for the introduction, from tomorrow we begin our classes. Thank you"
