Beneath The Mask

1. The Departure

People like me don't deserve to live; atleast that's what my mother said. The words kept ringing in my head. I can almost hear Samantha's angry voice defending me.

"How can you say that? It's not her fault that it happened!"

That's how my best friend is; always protecting me. She is the only one in the whole world who truely cares for me.

The beep sound distracted me from my thoughts, attracting my attention to an air hostess dressed in navy blue coat and skirt. She walked up to the aisle and started demonstrating the safety measures as the voice over went by.

"Isn't it just exciting?" asked Samantha gleeing so hard that all her teeth were visible

"Watch the girl do stupid things which we won't even remember when this plane crashes? Yep, it's pretty exhilarating", said I with a sarcastic smile.

She rolled her eyes ignoring my comment.

"Shut up! I meant running away! It's like a dream come true. You have no idea what's it like. I've been planning for this like forever!" said she with a sparkle in her deep brown eyes, like a child in a candy store.

"Well, you weren't staying with your parents or anybody else for the matter. So it's technically not running away."

"Anyway you are and I'm assisting you. So that's what it's called. Please dont ruin my happiness with it."

Just as I was about to say something, the 'fasten the seatbelt' sign illuminated and the flight started to take off.

I could feel my hands being clutched by Sam. She squeezed her eyes, forming a crinkle and mumbled up something, which I guess were prayers. I was surprised that she was scared considering her previous experiences with flight travel. But this was my first flight and I wasn't afraid. Cause I didn't care if my life ended now. It isn't worth living anyway.

After a few minutes, she finally let go off my hands. Plugging in the ear phones of her ipod, she began dancing in her seat like she was in a party. It was rather funny to watch and a smile escaped my lips.

I lifted up the shutter of the window and gazed out. I could feel my body slowly floating in the air like the clouds as if all my problems that weighed on my body finally went away. The next few hours went by quickly and soon I fell asleep.

"Catherine! Wake up, we have landed", I heard a voice calling me.

With much difficulty, I slowly opened my eyes to see Samantha picking up our bags. The flight was almost empty by now. Gosh, I must have slept so hard.

"Get up princess! As much as I want you to have a good sleep, this is not the place for it. Let's getting going", said she starting to get a little annoyed. God knows how long she must have tried waking me.

We picked up our bags and scrolled through the airport. After all the procedures were over, we proceeded towards the exit. Samantha couldn't conceal her excitement. It was way too much to be under her control.

"I hope London hasn't changed since the last time I was here!" said she, increasing her pace.

I just nodded my head because I've never been to London or anywhere else for the matter. The butterflies flying inside my stomach made me uncomfortable. I didn't know if I was ready to face what was out there. There were a lot of questions running in my mind just as we neared the exit.

What if I had to face it again? Or even worse, what if he finds me?

I froze at the thought of it. I couldn't go back to hell. And I know it would be even worse if he finds me now.

"Are you okay?" asked Sam with concern in her voice.

I couldn't trouble her anymore. So I kept the thoughts to myself.

"Yes", I answered trying to bring up a smile.

I can't go back now. So letting out a heavy breath, I stepped out of the airport to face my fate.
