Chapter 7

Emi took me to a coffee shop away from school to clear my head. Trust me, going out wasn't easy because we had to meet some people to sign a particular form. Well, we did not really do that because Emi's mom gave us two cards I assumed to be our passes.

Emi's mother was the principal of Holyfield college and it was pretty easy for Emi to get things. The only disadvantage was that she had to be good always and be on top. Thank God my father wasn't the principal of this school... If not, he would have sliced my neck for what happened earlier today in class.

"What can I get you?" A waitress brought me out from the dark part of my mind that was constantly filled with the horrible things our father did to us.

"A mochaccino, please." I gave a tight lipped smile and she averted her gaze to the little jotter in hand, probably writing down my order.

"What topping?"

"Extra milk foam and sprinkles of powdered chocolate." I dropped the novel I had been reading on our way here on the table.

"What about you?" She turned to face Emi.

"A cappuccino."

With that, the waitress left and I used my eyes to survey the cafe. It was painted in ivory color and had round coffee brown tables with chairs around them. I made out a lovers seat situated at the end side of the cafe and close to a beautiful view of the streets.

The flowery or was it the nutty scent of coffee wafted into my nose and made me anxious for my mocha.

"Here you go." The waitress placed our cups on the table and left.

"So, how are you feeling now?" Emi asked, using her spoon to stare the creamy cappuccino in front of her.

"Better." I replied, picking up my black straw and dipping it in my chocolate cup of coffee.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you." She sipped from her cup and placed the bottom on the table. "My friends would be joining us. They are still trying to get their forms signed."

"That school is a whole new level of stress." I shook my head and sipped more coffee. The sweet liquid danced and frolicked with my taste buds a little before going down my throat.

"You'd get used to it." She chuckled and the door bell filled the cafe, meaning someone just walked in.

I glanced over my shoulder and saw Maddy making her way into the cafe. The moment our eyes jammed, her face bloomed and she showed off some teeth which I tried my possible best to return. Beside her was a girl in jeans skirt and it was pretty short. Were short skirts not banned?

"Hey..." She drew the wooden seat on the right hand side and sat. "Sorry I'm late. I had to wait for Mr Chris to sign my form. He was lecturing a class."

"It's fine." Emi answered and the chattering between the both of them continued.

The doorbell jingled again, but this time I didn't make an effort to see who it was. I pulled out my phone and decided to text Debby a bit since I wasn't good in socializing with the friends of my friend.

The sweet jazz music soothed my soul and made me forget about my father and the little incident that happened in class. I was definitely wearing a paper bag over my head tomorrow.

The sound of somebody's footsteps filled my ears and I imagined moving them like a dog's own. The footsteps sounded like that of a male...I was very sure about it, but my curiosity wasn't bubbling so I killed the sound in my head.

"Hey," A familiar said and I snapped my head up to download his face.

It was him-Mr adidas guy and no, he wasn't talking to me. My eyes lingered on his outfit and I instantly loved the denim shirt he had on. His hair was in a messy side part that looked like he just got out of bed, but it was incredibly cute.

"Emi." He stretched his hand out to her and she shook him.

He drew the back of her palm to his lips and placed a kiss on it. Emi's cheeks went crimson and Maddie smiled at him dreamingly. He shook Maddie with a kiss on her hand and just when he turned to my own side of the table, he stretched his hand past me and shook the short jeans girl.

What the-did he just ignore me like I was invisible? My jaw bones tightened and I swallowed the bile that rose in my throat. I lowered my gaze back to my phone and blinked rapidly, trying to tighten the bottle cap of my emotions.

He sat on his seat and spoke with the most arousing husky voice I had ever heard.

"Who is your beautiful friend?" He asked and my heart skipped a beat. A small smile crept on to my face, but I bit my bottom lip to hide it. Thank God my head was lowered.

"Her name is Hephzibah." Emi voiced and my stomach felt sick.

"No, not the vomit girl." He stated. "The pretty one in jeans."

My heart instantly deflated and the smile on my face was replaced with a frown. Just when I was beginning to like him. I kept my eyes on my phone and was itching to be out of this place, away from this insensitive male.

"Don't mention barf." She smacked his arm. "I'm drinking coffee here and oh, her name is-"

I zoned her out and stared longly at my phone. Was it entirely my fault that I vomited on his shoe? I scoffed loudly and wished I had brought the shoe with me-I would have flung it on his body.

"Wait, you read James Hadley's books?" He picked up the book that was clearly in front of me and I raised my head to view his face. "He's my favorite mystery author."

"Nah, my favorite is Agatha Christie. She's the best." Emi protested.

"True Agatha is the best, but I love James Hadley Chase." I finally voiced and they all glanced at me.

"Emi, so is this yours?" He ignored me for the second time.

Violence is not the key, Hephzibah.

My subconscious said, getting rid of the thought of me downing my cup of cappuccino on him.

"Nope." She shook her head.

"Maddie?" He pushed back the small amount of hair that fell to his face.

"No." Maddie smiled.

He asked the girl beside me and she said no. My jaw slacked and my throat became dry. I sipped from my cup of mosh and instantly felt self conscious.

Wasn't I pretty or something?

He placed the book back on the table and continued talking about what I concluded to be shenanigans since it was coming from him.

After accepting with my mind that I had gotten enough snubbing, I pushed my chair back and stood up.

"I'll be heading to my dorm now. Debby needs my help with something." Immediately the lie escaped from my lips, my throat scratched me.

"C'mon, stay..." Emi whined and it slightly irritated me. Did she not see how I was ignored by this guy?

"Debby needs me." I tucked in my lips and flashed her a fake smile. "Bye." I carried the book and placed it in my bag.

I left the coffee shop and made it back to the gates of the school.

"Where's your pass?" The security asked at the gate and I frantically searched my bag for it.

My eyes widened when I couldn't find it.

"I was given one, but I left it at the cafe...I passed here with the principal's daughter an hour ago."

"Really?" The security guy in a dark blue uniform ached his brow at me.

"Yes." I simpered, hoping I wouldn't have to go back for the pass.

"Your ID card?"

"I left it in my dorm."

"No pass, no entry. No ID, you sleep outside." He said sarcastically and his eyes danced in silent laughter. "Didn't you sign a form? Where is it?"

"Please, let me just go in...I'll bring my ID card to show you."

He dipped his hand into his pocket and pulled out a torch with which he used to flash my eyes in broad daylight. I squinted my eyes and wondered what this man was doing.

"Sir, I don't un-"

"Shut up and get out of this place." He snapped without moving the muscles in his face.

I stepped aside and decided to phone Emi.

"Emi...I got stuck."

"How?"

"I think I left my pass in your bag and now they are not letting me in, could you please come with it?"

"I'm so sorry." She voiced. "I'll be right there."

After waiting for five minutes a car that wasn't Emi's ride stopped beside me and the window went down slowly.

"Emi sent me to you." His unique obsidian eyes pierced into my soul once again. Suddenly, whatever rushed through me was replaced with anger.

This dude ignored me like a thousand times today so why was he talking to me-oh, Emi sent him to me.

"Hop in."

I gulped and nodded my head, not knowing what to say.

The moment I stepped foot into his car, a familiar voice yelled my name like I had committed the greatest sin of all time.

"Hephzibah!" His baritone voice sold him off of his anger. The moment I turned to see his face, fear gripped me once again.
