Chapter 6

I laid down comfortably on beach chair and allowed the sun to soak in my skin.

I can't believe we're in the Caribbean islands, it almost feels surreal to be in this amazing region of North America.

It was the first time Demetrius had allowed me to go to a public beach and frankly, I hated it.

Don't get me wrong the beach was lovely, the weather was perfect and the scenery was breathtaking.

However, in our own private beach (imagine my shock when I found out Demetrius had his own beach in the Caribbean) it was much more relaxing, I could hear the calming waves of the beautiful sea as I closed my eyes and felt the sun's warm rays of light tan my body.

In this place, I can't get a moment of silence, there are countless kids running around and screaming with buckets on their heads. To make matters worse, the crowded beach has forced me to have my chair squashed at the back of the beach. My usual front row seat to the scenery was taken by a family picnic.

"Argh." I groan as I cover my ears, hoping to drown out the never-ending screams of little children.

"Told you, you would hate it." Demetrius commented casually beside me while reading his book.

"This doesn't make any sense, I used to love coming here, now it feels like the worst place in earth."

Demetrius chuckled. "The high life Sophia, it changes you."

"I haven't changed." I muttered, folding my arms and looking at the terrain before me - well as much of it as I could see.

"I'm going for a swim." I sighed when I knew there was no chance I would be able to observe the beautiful sunset from where I was and proceeded to take off my foral sundress.

I hadn't even began to move the straps from my shoulders before Demetrius' three bodyguards acted as the great wall of China around me.

I staggered back in shock as the tall figures of three giant men's backs came in view. "Demetrius, what is the meaning of this?" I hissed when his three bodyguards shielded me as I took off my dress.

Demetrius looked around the swarmed beach before turning to me. "Do you know what entices men more than the sight of you wearing a bikini?" He questioned as he eyed my outfit, mostly out of irritation that I refused to wear my one piece.

I let out a breathy laugh and shook my head. "Well this should be good." I folded my arms and waited patiently for him to answer.

"It's the sensuous movement of your body as you slowly take off the dress."

I stood still and stared at my overreactive husband. "You're delusional." I shook my head at him before making a run for the water.

I dried my wet body with the beach towel and wrapped it around my soaking body. I knew how much of a hissy fit Demetrius would make if he saw me lying down, exposed in only a bikini.

"Want one?" A cold icy bottle of coke was placed on my lap and I instantly shivered at the coldness. I glared at Demetrius as he laughed at me.

"You did that on purpose." He only winked before putting on his sunglasses and relaxing.

"How was your swim?" He asked without looking at me.

"It must have been good seeing as you didn't punch anybody for staring at me for more than 10 seconds." I smiled wryly.

"True." He chuckled before taking a swig of his coke, I did the same.

"Demetrius?"

"Hm?"

"What would you do if your name was Hephaestus?"

"I'd shoot myself." He answered without hesitation.

"Wouldn't it be much easier if you just had the name on your birth certificate changed?"

He seemed to be in deep thought before answering. "That too." I chuckled at his unintended joke.

I suddenly fell off my chair when a solid object landed square on my forehead.

"Ow! You son of a-" I stopped myself short when I saw nobody in my eyesight. Slowly, I looked down and saw the most terrified little boy staring up at me with glistening grey eyes.

"I-I'm s-sorry mam." He stuttered and I immediately felt bad for being the reason for his fear, he seemed to be holding back unshed tears and it only made me feel worse.

"Is this yours?" I asked with a wide smile as I held up the orange frisbee that lay against my foot.

"Yes." He nodded eagerly with an uncertain look on his face, mainly because I appeared to be livid only a few minutes ago.

"Here you go." I handed the frisbee to him and he gratefully took, this time giving me a genuinely smile and showing off his missing front tooth.

"Thank you mam." He held the frisbee to his chest.

"Call me Sophia." I held my hands to shake his and he happily took it, giving me another beautiful smile.

"What is your name?"

"Max." He answered confidently, it seemed as if the shy boy I had met only a few minutes ago had transformed to a charming boy filled with confidence.

"I love your name." I complimented.

His eyes instantly lit up. "You do?"

I laughed at the little boy's excitement and couldn't help but ruffled his curly blonde hair. "Of course I do."

"Max!" I heard a woman's voice shout. Max and I turned to the source of the voice. It was short lady, she had long auburn hair that reached her shoulders and glowing grey eyes just like Max, she must be his mother.

"Mummy!" Max immediately ran into the woman's arms and she cocooned him in her arms.

"My baby! Do you know how worried I was? Daddy and I have been looking everywhere for you." She lightly scolded.

"Sorry mummy." Max apologised sincerely.

"That's ok honey, I'm just glad I found you." She kissed his pink cheeks and his face lit up like a light bulb in his mother's arms. It made me wish for a family of my own.

"Look mummy, I made a friend." He suddenly pointed to me and looked at mother and son like a deer stuck in headlights.

"Hi, I'm Kim." She gave me a warm smile and held out her hand to shake mine."

"Sophia." I smiled back and shook her hand.

"Thank you so much for looking after Max." She spoke sincerely and I only nodded.

"It's no problem." I smiled.

"Well, thanks again. We should get going, his dad will be eager to see him." She smiled one last time and waved goodbye. "Bye Sophia!" Max shouted as he waved enthusiastically at me.

I couldn't help it when I waved back just as enthusiastically and beamed. "Bye Max!" When they were completely out of sight I sighed and walked back to my spot.

I sat back on my beach chair and was met with a very smug Demetrius smirking up at me.

"What is it now?" I stared at him.

"You will make an excellent mother someday." He observed smiling at me.

"Oh, you saw that?" I smiled feeling a blush crawling up my neck.

"Of course I did, the way you interacted with the child was what any great mother would do." He reached out for my hand and squeezed it in a reassuring manner.

"Wow, it's worse than I thought." Demetrius gently touched my forehead and I hissed at the flash of pain from where he touched.

"You need an ice pack." He stated as he began to wear his shoes.

"Demetrius, I'm fine." I made a move to stop him but he was already up.

"No, you're not." He stated firmly before grabbing his car keys and a bodyguard.

"I'll be back in five minutes." He said before hurriedly leaving the beach.

"Has anyone ever told you, you're an excellent swimmer?" A voice spoke behind me. It wasn't Demetrius.

I ignored the man's comment. "Can I help you?"

"No, but I can help you." The man spoke with a small smirk.

"Excuse me." I answered with a glare.

My two bodyguards stepped in to interfere but I held up my hand to stop them.

"What are you talking about?" I asked slightly curious about this man's purpose.

"I know enough about your husband to not make a move on his wife, so I assure you my intentions are sincere." I saw a flash of fear in his eyes and slightly relaxed, so he was honestly afraid of my husband.

"Speak." I ordered. "You've got two minutes."

"There are bad people after your husband Sophia." He spoke in a hushed tone and my eyes widened.

"Bad people? Like who?" I recalled Demetrius talking about the bad things happening in the world, was this one of them?

"We can't speak here. We need somewhere more private we can talk." The man continuously turned around to look at his surroundings in what seemed to be distress.

"I cannot, my husband will never allow it."

"He doesn't have to know, here take this, meet me there in five days if you want the answers you seek. He handed me a piece of card and I stuffed it in my bra, out of his sight of course.

"Remember, you must not tell a single soul about this, if word gets out about anything we have discussed, both of us won't live to see tomorrow." The frightened look on his face told me he was dead serious.

"Your husband is going to be back any minute, remember -" He didn't get to finish. It was all so fast, I didn't even see it coming, I watched in pure horror as Demetrius' knuckles collided fiercely with the man's jaw, knocking him straight of the chair.

I cringed as he spat out blood onto the clean sand. "What gave you right to come anywhere near my wife!" Demetrius spat as he mercilessly kicked the man in the stomach repeatedly.

He could barely get two words out before a sickening red liquid spewed out of his mouth and down his chin, he was barely conscious.

"Demetrius stop! He didn't do anything wrong." I cried as I attempted to restrain my brutal husband from murdering the innocent man.

"Do you know who I am?" He grabbed the man by the scruff of the neck and hauled him up to his feet. As he staggered, completely unaware of his surroundings Demetrius gave him another bone-crushing punch to his jaw, sending him flying to the ground in a bloody heap.

"Demetrius stop this, please!" I begged as I cried for the helpless man and so many others who had befallen the same fate.

"Get Sophia out of here." He ordered emotionlessly without looking at me.

I suddenly felt two pairs of sturdy arms grab me and carry me out of the scene. "Demetrius let him go! I am begging you." I cried as I struggled against their iron grip, it was no use.

I felt another round of sobs escape me as I heard the man scream in pain as he begged for mercy. The sound of breaking bones was the answer to his plea.

I felt my body go weak as I ceased the useless struggle to escape their holds. I allowed them to put me in the backseat and shut my eyes tight like I always did to drown out the sounds of their anguish.
