Chapter 8

I and Jason woke up late the next  morning and even though we later slept together in the same room last night, something wasn't right this morning. There was something like an invisible wall between us and we treated ourselves like strangers.
Jason opened the car door for me as usual but there was nothing like the usual smooching and teasing.

I sat down like a robot and picked up my phone which I had forgotten inside the car yesternoon
There were several calls and messages on it, most of it from Cynthia.
And when I went through Cynthia messages, all of them meant the same thing 'I didn't do it".
I put down my phone as Jason started the car and headed to the office.

Later in the day, someone walked into my office and I looked up from the file that I was going through, it was Cynthia.
Her eyes were red and she didn't use her usual makeover
"Lexi" she called slowly as she stood in front of my table
"You can see that I'm busy"
"Please" she pleaded
I closed my eyes, breathe in heavily in order to calm myself down enough to hear what the homewrecker had to say
"Two minutes" I said
She sighed and put her hands on my table
"You slapping me yesterday was wrong"
I'm not sorry for doing so.
I thought
"Because I didn't do it.
But I'm not mad at you. I would have done the same thing if I was in your shoes. But before I can raise my hand and slap someone that I call my friend, I will find out the truth"
"That was why I asked for your phone and it was there.
All the messages was there"
"But still, I didn't do it"
"Are you done?
"
"I have no idea how those messages got to my phone or when I snapped that picture"
"You are just repeating yourself"
"At least, I've told you the truth"
"Thank you for telling me the truth" I said sarcastically "I don't want to see you in my office again unless it's job related.
Don't say hi to me when you see me on the street. Don't call my phone or that of my husband. We're no longer friends"
"I will always consider you my friend, my best friend" she said and walked out of my office
During lunch break, I went to Jason's office and we had one of the worst lunch ever.

No word was exchanged between us and the only sounds in the room were those of our cutleries.

When we got back home, I spent my hours with Maxwell while Jason spent his hours in his office
Jason was already asleep when I stepped inside the room but I knew that that was a lie.
Jason doesn't sleep without me by his side.
I slowly tucked myself into bed beside him and resisted the urge to touch him

One week later
Several times during the nights, I would catch Jason staring at me but whenever I open my eyes, Jason would have closed his.
He intentionally didn't touched me because he was scared of I rejecting him. But I knew he wanted me the same way I wanted him.
Tonight, his back was to me and he was pretending to be asleep even though I was sure that he wasn't sleeping.

After few hours hesitation, I put my hand on his shoulder, his body became stiffed instantly and he held is breathe
"Jason" I called softly but he didn't reply
I shifted more to him and wrapped my hand around his waist.
"Jason"
He turned around and looked at me, his grey eyes searching my brown eyes
"Jason I want you" I whispered
He placed his hands on each side of my head "But you don't trust me" he said babyishly "I didn't do it.
I've never cheated on you and I will never cheat on you"
"I trust you.
I love you" I said and started kissing him.
"I love you too" he said into my mouth and took control

I and Cynthia had met on several occasions inside the company; in the elevators, in the hallways, at meetings, inside my office and inside hers and on every single occasion, she greeted me with a smiling face which I always ignored.
I meant it when I told her that we were no longer friends
Half an hour before closing time, Cynthia came inside my office and I looked up.

"Good afternoon" she said but I said nothing.

She shrugged her shoulder and dropped two envelopes on the table.

I looked at her curiously and she spoke "The first one is my resignation letter.
I will be leaving the company by the end of the month. And the second letter is my personal letter to you. No matter how you treat me or how you look at me or what you think of me, in my mind, both of us are always going to be best of friends. Help me to deliver my resignation letter to Mr Stokes and my regards to Maxwell"
She walked out of my office and I angrily threw both letters inside one of my drawers, locked the drawer and threw it key at the wall.
Even though I was no longer in good terms with her, subconsciously, she was still my best friend and I wasn't in support of her resigning.
Jason ran into my office and searched it for few seconds before facing me
"Are you okay?
"
"I don't know" I said, got out of my seat and hugged him.

"Do you want to talk about it?
" He asked as he hugged me back
"It's Cynthia.
She gave me her resignation letter"
"And you don't like it?
"
"She is my friend.
I consider her my sister and even though she..." Jason body stiffened and I trailed off. I sighed heavily and said "Can we go home now?"
"Of course" he replied "let me get the car keys"
As he was about to step inside his office through the adjoining door, someone said "Mr Stokes" and both of us looked at Ella who was standing at the entrance of my office door with a file in her hand
"Yes" Jason answered
"The seminar has been rescheduled"
Jason was supposed to attend a seminar on Friday and Saturday of this week
"To when?
" Jason asked
"Two weeks time" Ella replied
"Okay"
"And I need you to sign this file"
"Okay.
Go and drop it in my office and I will go through it tomorrow morning"
"Okay sir"
Jason and Ella went inside Jason's office and I packed my bags, walked to the carpark and waited for Jason who joined me five minutes later
