Chapter 6: A Rat In The House

Lila's POV:
I slowly opened my eyes, feeling groggy and disoriented.
I must've fallen back asleep, not even realizing when Kara left my room. I had no idea how long I had been asleep, but when I looked at the clock, I realized it was already past noon. I must have been exhausted from my injury the night before, still healing and needing more rest. I pushed myself up, wincing at the pain where the arrow had struck me. It was a close call, and another inch closer the arrow would have gone through my heart and immediately killed me. I couldn't remember much from the night before, but I knew I had missed dinner and breakfast, which explained my intense hunger.
As I attempted to get out of bed, I felt light-headed and weak.
I knew I needed to eat something, but making my way to the kitchen felt like an impossible task. I slowly made my way down the hallway, leaning against the walls for support. My legs felt like jelly and my head was spinning. Finally, I reached the kitchen and collapsed into one of the chairs. I took a moment to catch my breath and then opened the fridge, hoping to find something to eat. To my disappointment, it was practically empty. I needed to restock the mansion's food supply, as nobody cared about anything other than blood for food save for me and Kara who delight greatly in eating junks. There was a section in the mansion with steady supply of blood bought from blood banks. It served as the family's food storage.
Sighing, I closed the fridge and opened the pantry.
I scrounged around and found a few granola bars and a pack of crackers. It wasn't a substantial meal, but it would have to do. I devoured the snacks, feeling slightly better but still weak. Feeling a bit more energized, I decided to take a walk around the mansion to stretch my legs. As I made my way through the grand hallways, I couldn't help but admire the beauty of my home. It was a grand old mansion, full of history and secrets and it had been in my family for generations. As I turned a corner, I noticed a faint noise coming from one of the rooms. Curiosity getting the best of me, I couldn't resist investigating. To my surprise, I found Kara in one of the guest bedrooms, vigorously training and practicing her fighting skills. I watched in awe as she moved with grace and precision, taking down imaginary enemies. I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in her abilities. She had come a long way since I first agreed to train her, and I was grateful for the bond we had formed.
Just as I was about to interrupt her training, she noticed me standing there and froze.
'Hey, you're up,' she said, a hint of worry in her voice. 'Yeah, finally,' I replied, smiling weakly. 'Thanks for checking up earlier.' 'Of course,' she said, her expression softening. 'You took a pretty hard hit. I wanted to make sure you were okay.' 'We're a team,' she said simply, shrugging off my gratitude. 'Now, enough about that. How are you feeling? Do you need anything?' 'I'm feeling better, thanks to you,' I said sincerely. She stopped her training and walked towards me, looking downcast. 'Hey, what's up?' I asked as she approached me. 'I wanted to ask you something,' Kara said with a serious expression on her face. I raised an eyebrow, curious about what she wanted to ask. 'What is it?' 'what is it about the missing parcel that my dad was talking about?' Kara asked, getting straight to the point.
I was taken aback by her question.
The missing parcel wasn't something I expected her to know about. 'Uh, yeah I do. How did you find out about it?' I asked, trying to figure out how she knew. Kara simply shrugged her shoulders. 'Word gets out. My dad was talking about it with my older siblings Andre and Mia, and I overheard them.' I was surprised by her response. I didn't expect her to have such a nonchalant attitude towards the situation. 'But why were they talking about it?' I asked, still trying to make sense of it all. 'Apparently, my dad mentioned it to them and said that you had lost it in wolf territory, and asked Andre to accompany you recover it tonight. So I thought I'd ask you,' Kara explained.
I nodded my head, understanding the situation a bit better now.
'It's fine Kara it's nothing serious,' I replied, not wanting to divulge too much information. Kara narrowed her eyes at me, sensing that I was hiding something. 'Come on, Lila. I won't tell anyone, I promise,' she pleaded, trying to get me to open up. I sighed, knowing that I could trust Kara. 'Okay, fine. But you have to promise not to tell anyone, especially your dad,' I said, making sure she understood the seriousness of the situation. Kara nodded eagerly, her curiosity getting the best of her. I proceeded to tell her all about the missing parcel and the suspicious behavior of the Vampires who attacked me in the woods. I explained that the ambush was staged perfectly, and the vampires knew to stay away from wolf territory. 'Only a vampire from Grimswood would know the territories that well, and I'm sure there's a rat in the house' I retorted. She listened intently, and when I finished, she asked if I'm implying that someone from the mansion set me up, and I nodded. 'I won't tell anyone, I promise. I'll keep an eye out for anything suspicious,' she said with determination. I smiled, glad to have her on my side. 'Thanks, Kara. I know I can always count on you,' I said, grateful for her support. Kara patted my shoulder and headed back to continue her training, and I went back to my room to go prepare for the parcel recovery scheduled for later that night.
When I got to my room, I Slowly, I lowered my hand to feel the wound and when my fingers touched it, I hissed in pain.
The arrow from the Sacred Oak tree had pierced my skin deeply, causing a long gash on my back. I reached for the bandages on my bedside table and started wrapping them around my back. If it were an ordinary injury or cut, it would've healed instantly, but since the arrow was from the Sacred Oak tree, it would take longer - maybe days or even weeks. As I struggled to turn my hand around my body to wrap the bandages, I heard a knock on my door. I quickly composed myself and called out in a strong voice, 'Come in.' The door opened and in walked Liam, Rufus's only offspring. He held a stern look on his face, as he seldom smiled. Without saying anything, he walked up to me and took the bandages from me. Liam was tall, muscular and scary, and he rarely spoke- my weirdest cousin. He assisted me in tying the bandages around my wound. 'Thank you, Liam,' I said gratefully, when he was done.
He nodded in response and then finally spoke, 'You are lucky it missed your heart.
' 'Well, at least fate would have it that I survived,' I said with a small smile. He patted my shoulder and left the room without saying anything further. I stood up from my bed and stretched, then walked towards my closet.. At the sight of my beloved black leather suit, I frowned. It was my go-to outfit which made me feel like a superhero, invincible and strong. Now it has been ruined by the arrow that hit me. I was thinking of how to mend it, but before I could come up with a solution, there was another knock on the door. With a sigh, I walked over and opened it, ready to face whoever was on the other side. It was my cousin Andre, my uncle Greg's first offspring dragging with him, a huge garment bag. 'What's this?' I asked, eyeing the bag suspiciously. Andre chuckled. 'It's a surprise from Aunt Rebekah. She had it made for you.' I raised an eyebrow, in curiosity. I opened the bag and was immediately greeted by a sophisticated, sleek-looking suit. It was made of a material I've never seen before, a deep blue with hints of silver. It looked like something straight out of a futuristic movie. As I took it out, Andre explained that Aunt Rebekah wanted to give me something more durable and flexible. My heart swelled with gratitude and joy. I quickly gestured for Andre to leave so I could try out the suit.
