Chapter 9: It's You

Rayne's POV:
I tapped my foot impatiently under the dinner table, glancing over at the front door every few minutes.
I couldn't wait for dinner to be over, as I so much anticipated my seeing Lila. As my father carved into the perfectly cooked steak he had made, and poured himself a glass of his favorite grape wine, my mind was racing with anxiety. In a few moments, we finished our meal, and my dad joked about how he would need some more wine to get through another one of my mom's famous desserts while she was alive, but I wasn't listening. I was too busy formulating the perfect plan to sneak out of the cabin that night and meet Lila. And as I cleared my plate, I engaged my father in an animated conversation about his plans for our pack as the alpha, all while my mind focused on the ways I could slip away. A sense of adventure permeated the air, urging me to be more creative than ever before. Once dinner was over, I excused myself from the table, claiming exhaustion from a long day. My father, content with his wine, gave me a weary nod and retreated to his favorite armchair by the fireplace. I couldn't help but smile, knowing that the plan had been set into motion.
I rushed to my room, throwing open the door and allowing the cool night breeze to brush against my face.
With my heart pounding, I began to collect the tools for my adventure- an old trench coat, and a flashlight,. I was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead, even though I was scared the vampires weren't going to be as friendly as the first time. I waited a few more time to make sure my father had fallen asleep, and then careful not to disturb or wake him up, I made my way through the dimly lit cabin, tiptoeing past creaking floorboards. Gently shutting the door behind me, I plunged into the deep shadows of the moonlit forest with my lit flashlight. The trees whispered secrets as I navigated the familiar trail, unseen by any prying eyes. As I ventured deeper into the enchanting wilderness, my excitement grew, mingling with the hushed symphony of nature. As I ventured further, illuminated only by the soft glow of the moon, a thought struck me like a lightning bolt in the night. 'What if Lila doesn't recognize me at all?' She had been hit by the time we met, and the arrow hadn't just weakened her physically but may have also clouded her mind. 'How would I introduce myself to her as the one who saved her?' The mere thought of this possibility scared me even more than the treacherous journey into vampire territory as a fearless werewolf.
Hours began to seem like an eternity as possible scenarios played out in my head about meeting Lila.
I finally reached the forbidden vampire territory, and the air grew heavy with tension, as it seemed as though I could sense their presence lurking in the shadows. The moon shone brightly overhead, casting an ethereal glow upon the cobblestone path leading to her mansion. It stood tall and imposing, like a fortress guarding the secrets within. As I approached, a wave of uncertainty washed over me. Was I making a mistake? Was this fascination with a vampire worth risking everything? But then I remembered the look in her eyes, the way she smiled, and all my doubts faded away. With a steady resolve, I approached the gates to the grand entrance of the mansion. The heavy gates creaked open, and three figures emerged out from the gates. My heart pounded painfully against my ribcage, and beads of sweat dotted my forehead. Panic clenched my insides as the three figures steadily approached. One of them, swift and agile, closed the distance between us in the blink of an eye. With a vice-like grip, he took hold of my old trench coat, ready to throw me to the ground. Just as my fate seemed sealed, a voice, soothing yet filled with authority, stopped him in his tracks. "Liam, wait!" The feminine voice called out, cutting through the silence like a glimmer of hope. It was a voice with a commanding presence, commanding even Liam to halt his intentions without question. Surprised, I looked toward the source of the voice, hoping for a savior.
Emerging from the shadows, she appeared as if she was a goddess of the night, her beauty transcending the realm of mortals.
Her porcelain skin shimmered under the moon's ethereal glow, contrasting beautifully with her flowing dark hair. 'It's you!' I exclaimed. 'Lila!,' I breathed, barely able to contain my excitement. Liam's nostrils flared, fangs threatening to pierce through my skin as he left my coat and walked back to position himself with the other two. Lila's vibrant green eyes widened in recognition as she moved closer to me, her breath hitching in her throat. "I know you," she whispered, her voice filled with awe. "You're the werewolf that saved me." A hint of a smile graced my lips as I nodded, memories of that fateful night rushing back to me. "What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of surprise and excitement. It seemed beyond her wildest dreams to ever meet me again. I hesitated for a moment before responding, unsure of how she would react. "I just wanted to check how you're doing," I finally said, my words filled with genuine concern. Her eyes softened, and a smile tugged at her lips. "Well, as you can see," she gestured around her, "I'm fine." Her voice carried a sense of gratitude, as if she couldn't quite comprehend how lucky she had been that night.
Before I could utter another word, a deep, menacing voice cut through the silence.
"Now leave!" The voice belonged to the other vampire who had come out of the gates with Lila and Liam, his cold eyes glaring at me with undisguised hostility. Ignoring his hostility, I took a step closer to Lila. "I'm just glad to know you're safe" I said softly. Liam growled, his fangs glistening in the moonlight. "Just because you saved her once doesn't give you the right to intrude in our lives," he spat, his eyes narrowing dangerously. Lila looked at me, torn between her gratitude and loyalty towards Liam. "I appreciate what you did, truly," she said softly. "But you just can't come wandering into vampire territory. You have to leave. I hope you can understand. "My heart sank, but I nodded, accepting her decision. "I understand," I replied, my voice laced with resignation. " I Just wanted to make sure you're okay." With a final glance, I turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving the three of them alone at the mansion's gate. As I walked away, my mind buzzed with thoughts of the bond we had formed that night, a connection that could never truly be broken. And though my heart ached, I found solace in knowing that I had made a difference in her life, and I finally got to see her pretty face once more. And if fate would have it, our paths would definitely cross again as I have felt a very strong connection to her. After another long walk, I got back home to the cabin. I sneakily pushed open the door and yet again tiptoed past my father who was fast asleep, making my way to my room. As soon as I shut the door, I fell on my bed feeling tired and exhausted. What a day it was.
