Chapter Seven

After the dinner, Mrs. Carol leads us to the fireplace next to the bedrooms of this house. Gray was sitting in front of the crackling fire while I was comfortably sitting at the couch with Mrs. Carol, as she was telling some stories from her father.

"I can't believe I will be talking about dad again, with a moment like this. We used to do this with my son" Mrs. Carol uttered,

"And where is he now?" I asked

"Ugh, my son was in the city for college. Hey, how old are you dear?" she suddenly asked

"Twenty three" I answered

"Oh, my son is two years younger than you. I remember when the first time we let him travel with us out of this village and we visited the Dewey's. He's really happy when he met Gray and Broody, but I feel sad for my son when he told me that he envies them for having each other as brothers" Mrs. Carol flash a smile when she saw me saddened to his story

"But thanks to this Gray that treat him like his own younger brother. My son was still eight and was on his third grade and Gray was on his seventh grade, he's thirteen that time I guess, My son got bullied by his classmates but then, luckily Gray was there to punch those kids for my son" Mrs. Carol laughed like she preferred how violent Gray was

"Oh isn't that so violent for a kid like him?" I asked as I was looking at Gray still facing the fire

"For me? No, that was cool. I was not like Maybel that always yell at them-hey son, how was your mother, I didn't hear about her for a long time." I flinched a bit when Gray suddenly stood up

"It makes me feel bad that you keep mentioning her but you didn't even know what happened to her..." he sighed which makes us look at him waiting to continue what he means

"Now can you just please show me my room for I need to go to bed now. We will be early for tomorrow" the whole time he's talking, Mrs. Carol seemed to be very shocked as she's looking awfully to Gray.

"Oh I'm sorry, I'm so sorry son. Come on, I'll just show you your room" Mrs. Carol approaches him and leads to the bedroom just beside where we are.

I watch them as Mrs. Carol felt sad talking at Gray. Though I cant clearly hear what they were talking about, I think there's really something wrong about Gray when Mrs. Carol hugged him before he could enter the room.

"I understand what he feels right now. But moving on is always the best choice we could have in life" I don't exactly understand what Mrs. Carol talks about as she was getting back to the couch but what she just told was right so I just nodded

"Lauren, how long you exactly have known Gray?" Mrs. Carol suddenly asked when she sat back again right in front of me.

"I really don't know him that much. We just met about...a few days ago" I answered back.

She straightly looked at me for a minute.

"What?" I asked her when I felt uneasy

"Can you please stay much more longer with him?"

I wrinkled my head looking at her

"What?" I curiously asked again

"Oh, uh nothing. Well, where was I earlier? Oh about Mr. Dewey" she tried to clear up what she said

"Actually, the last time I saw him was when my father finally bids his last goodbye. Mr. Dewey was with him until daddy's last breath, But Mr. Dewey didn't make it up to his burial when there was a phone call that reaches him and I saw how frustrated he was that time. He left his old fellow soldiers here that also felt confused about what exactly happened. He only leaves a word to one of his friends before he hurriedly droves back to his house together with his houseboy."

"and what was that?" I also asked in confusion She just shrugged.

"I also don't know. But I can feel that something wasn't right when Mr. Willer said that 'I never imagined I would reach this time of my life that I would pay back to Captain's greatness'" I chuckled while I watch Mrs. Carol acting like an old man trying to imitate Mr. Willer she was talking about

"...and that was the very last time I saw Mr. Dewey" she finally said

"He's a great man isn't he" I smiled looking at her that was now sipping on her tea

"Mr. Dewey? From my dad's stories before, I can say that he was a great Captain to them. I can also feel how much Dad respected him as there Captain since he saved daddy's life so many times before, but when the time comes and they both had their own family, Mr. Dewey preferred to be treated by each other as a family close friend rather than a Captain at the battlefield before."

I smiled as I silently listened to Mrs. Carol

"Why are you so interested in Mr. Dewey? Mind to tell me why exactly you looking for him?"

Mrs. Carol looked at me like she's waiting for me to tell her a story, and so I did. I told her about grandma and why I came back to States having my own task.

From the clock that was hanged up at the wall, it was already midnight when I was done explaining everything to her until I decided to go first to bed.

"It was nice to know a sweet young lady like you. Maybe that is why Gray decided to do this with you even though he's having a tough time. I wish that you both could accomplish your mission to find Mr. Dewey, and I wish that you could be with him until everything's going to be okay" she was about to start new storytelling.

I don't understand what she wanted to point out. I just smile at her before I go to the room she told me to.

As much as I wanted to listen more, I really need to get to bed, remembering that Gray told to be early for tomorrow. It was a good thing that she had plenty of guest rooms here and I didn't need to share with anyone.

Right in front of my room was where Gray was, I was convinced to check on him when I saw his door was half-opened. He was lying at the bed but I can't see his face clearly since it was a little bit dim inside

"Gray are you asleep? " I just had the urge to tell some words to him for I know he doesn't hear me. He's so quiet that he seemed to be already fallen asleep.

Gray can sometimes act harsh and impulsive, but I can already understand him, just what I saw and heard tonight.

"Hey, whatever's bothering you, Remember that everything's going to be fine," I told him before I gently closed the door.

I woke up from the bed when I was alarmed by a car engine. My body automatically ran outside when I remembered what Gray said last night.

He might leave me if I won't wake up early as he is

When I got outside the house, I saw Mrs. Carol busily weeding at her garden just beside the balcony,

and there was Gray, on the street, checking conditions of his car under the brightly shining sun.

"Good morning dear! It's good that you already wake up. I'll bet that badass might drive away without you. He was even angry when he woke up earlier " Mrs. Carol greeted by the time she saw me

"Hey wait!" I got panicked when Gray entered his car but it seemed like he didn't hear anything

"why would he be angry?" I asked in confusion though I know he's always been like that

She laughed and look at me for a while

"Did you close the door at his room last night?"

"Uhm, yeah? what does that have to do for him to be angry?"

Mrs. Carol laughed again as she was still busy on her plants

"Oh, Lauren, that badass boy might act like a lion sometimes, but believe me when I say that he turns to a scared kitten when he's in the dark" Mrs. Carol figuratively said

I looked at Gray, still trying to awake his car that sounds bad but still, it seems that he was ready to go when the car moves a little

''Oh, there he goes!'' Mrs. Carol warned

"Mrs. Carol, I think we should get going" I immediately ran to the car

"Are you gonna leave me here!" I was a little bit panting when I reach inside the car.

He looks at me annoyingly as he stopped the car engine.

"I nearly do, but you're lucky that my beloved truck got a little bit sick" he raised me a brow and got outside the car again.

Now I can see Mrs. Carol laughing at her garden. She was playing around with me I guess.

I deeply exhaled and followed Gray as he pulls up the car hood

"Maybe it was soaked at the heavy rain last night, how long will it take to fix it?" I asked as I watched him doing something at the car engine

"Uuhh, just a bit of this and...okay done" he exclaimed after doing something from the engines

"Is everything okay now?" Mrs. Carol just got approached to us

"Yeah, I guess" I answered her back.

Gray get inside the car and started it

"You wanna stay here?" he yelled inside

"Oh dear, just get rid of that badass...Get in, hurry, " Mrs. Carol told me

"Yeah, uh... thank you for last night Mrs. Carol" I smiled at her before I finally get inside

"Oh wait, bring this with you, fresh roses for your safe journey. Reach me out when you need something and I will do what I can. Good luck to the both of you" she handed me the flowers she'd been holding. She was looking straight to Gray as she was talking before he could start driving.

He just nodded in return

"I'll see you when I see you" he uttered back to her

"Thank you, Mrs. Carol, we'll surely do. Goodbye " I waved at her before we drove away. I can see her waving back from the side mirror.

"I can't believe we came all the way here without nothing" he muttered while we were again passing the cemetery.

It doesn't already look that creepy as it was just like yesterday

"We did, actually " I answered that makes him glare at me

"In very places that we go, there's always something we got without noticing. You just have to figure out what you had before you came, and to the slightest thing you got when you leave " I sniffed the bunch of roses as I talked to him

He furrowed his brows and shrugged

"What? like having those flowers?"

"Did you forget that I've gone there with a bunch of flowers, you get what you give. That's just it...Well that's not what I meant okay"

"Whatever" he rolled his eyes and focused driving

After some hours of driving, we eye to eyed when as we heard a grumbling stomach

"What? I still didn't eat breakfast, you know that" I irritatedly raised my brow on him looking at me

"You know we should grab for a snack" I convinced him

"Keep it, I still had things to do, so we need to get back to the city as soon as possible" he coldly utter

"Come on Gray, it'll take us half of the day heading back to the town, don't you also feel hungry ?" I tried convincing him again

"Nope" he answered like he doesn't care, after a moment a stomach growl was heard again

"That wasn't me" I curiously said and look at him teasingly

"Okay, okay, soon as we reach a restaurant or anything...just make it fast, I still had some things to catch up" he finally gave in.

Gray stopped the car when we passed by on a little cafe right beside a creek that we dropped by yesterday, though the flower stand wasn't here anymore.

The same as yesterday, the wooden logo welcomed me and the door chime sang as soon as I entered the cafe

It was cozy here which is perfect for cold seasons, though it was already summer and maybe that is why there wasn't any customer inside

After grabbing some chips and toasts, I immediately get back to the car where I left him waiting

"I think these would be enough to fill my pets inside my stomach until we reach the town, but I'm afraid we should stop over again anytime soon, " I said as I hand him some drinks and toasts, he silently accepted it and gives me a short glance. Maybe he's not in the mood to argue and that's better for him

I was about to fix my seatbelt when I heard him cursed

"No! No! No! Not now buddy" he was freaking out as he tries to start the engine that sounds bad

"Oh no, what's happening?" I tried to calm him down

He sighed as he looks irritatedly at me before he gets out from the car to lift the car's hood and check it

"I'll just find a handyman or something, just stay there and eat if you want," he said from outside

I took a few minutes of munching inside the car watching him doing something from the engine. A few moments later, he went inside the cafe.

My hunger fades when I saw him felt so uneasy as he gets outside so I decided to get out of the car to ask him

"What's wrong? Does this car need to be repair badly?" I ask when I saw him watching the engines desperately with his hands on his hips

"This car wasn't used for almost half a decade, but I didn't see this happening" he sighed

"Then we should just call a --"

"I tried, there's no use. This part of the world doesn't even have any signal" I can't help but laugh while watching him acting so agitated

"What? What's so funny" his furious face turned crimson

"Hey, hey, easy man! Okay, I'll try to ask for help inside. Maybe they've got something" I said trying to calm him down. I hold my laugh as I approached inside the cafe hoping that I could use my charm to ask for some help inside even when Gray couldn't.
