The Last Mutant

Chapter 1 The Last Mutant

The acid rains ended and mutants abounded. The total destruction of the planet was incomplete. I am old now and left with little time to tell my story.

My story begins at the end of World War Three, which became a horrific reality that recently ended with severe body counts on all sides and fronts. We,..being the The USA were the winners, if the winners of conflicts are determined by body counts, and only slightly so. I was rendered homeless by the job deficit that was caused by this costly warmongering that occurred in the latter part of the twenty first century. I found my self sleeping on a picnic table, in a public park. This is where my story begins.

I noticed that some of the other vagrants that were sharing my living space at the park, were changing dramatically in appearance. They had come to taken on scales, double rows of teeth, & strange looking insect like hair, and were as varied in color as the rainbow, as well as in emergence. I went to sleep that night not knowing that soon I would join their ranks.

When I awoke in the morning I noticed a green hue to my skin. My nose had grown into a proboscis similar to an anteater, and my fingers and toes were now webbed. My ears were shaped close to that of a large tobacco leaf. You may ask if anything else changed, and I would have to reply, "Isn't that enough?"

I realized that I hadn't had anything to eat since the previous day & was famished. I looked at the apples, & thought about food, but nothing I was used to eating appealed to me.

At that moment, a beetle was was crawling by at my feet. Without a thought, my anteater type nose scooped it up,.. placing it into my mouth, much like an elephant does. It appeared to act on it's own accord;.. without me even considering if the beetle was edible or not. It was instinct. I savored the flavor of the sweet crunchy beetle & looked around to see if anymore were about. Turning over a rotten log, I was delighted to find the underside loaded with termites. They weren't as tasty as the beetle, but I still found them quite palatable.

Now, I suppose it is time to introduce myself. I am Twim of the Green Mutants. I had no idea at the time what that statement would entail, & was shocked at my appearance in the mirror, I vowed to never look in another one again.

I came to the hasty conclusion to end it all, and found myself at the nearby Central City Bridge. I fully intended to jump, and put an end to this ghastly manifestation that I had become overnight. I took one last glance around & on the last zag of my view, I spotted her. A green feminine form crouched on the top rail of the bridge getting ready to take that final dive into oblivion. I cried out, "Wait, don't jump.. I want to talk to you". She peeked back through tear filled eyes, that blinked so dramatically when she saw me and it became obvious that we both decided not to be so hasty with our decision.

We both climbed down off of the rail and approached each other. I introduced myself, and she revealed to me that her name was Bela. The sweetest word I had ever heard. This is the first time I had heard the term "mirror people'. This referred to those who could see their self in the mirror..We were never to be apart again in this life time.

We noticed the mutants grouping together , mostly by color & genre. and all heading away from Central City. We jointly decided that our lot was best cast with the rest of The Greens, and proceeded West. We fell in amongst the other green mutants & struck up friendships with the Mutants of our kind,
