Chapter 9

"Here is your coffee, table 5," Emma teased placing Eric's order on his table.

He had come in and sat on table 5 since the first day.

Eric laughed.

"Why do you like to sit here anyway?" Emma asked.

"It's the best sit available here."

"And how did you come to that conclusion?" Emma asked raising her brows.

"It just happened," he said and they both laughed.

"When do you leave for break?" he asked

Emma checked the wall clock "few minutes from now."

"Alright then."

Emma went back to her table for work. Eric read a newspaper while watching her work. He did this on some days and it had really become a routine.

"I really like to walk in the park, clears my head," Eric said, while they both made their way across the park.

"Same here."

"How is the book going? Finished yet?"

"That's not how books are made, you need time," Emma said and he smiled "okay."

"When do I get to read it?" He asked.

"Soon, I need someone to give an honest opinion about it."

"I will and when the book is done, I need a signed copy," Eric said and Emma laughed. "Sure."

"So, tell me about your previous relationships?" Emma asked.

She had been curious to ask,  especially with the way he spoke about relationships.

Eric put his hands in both sides of his pocket as they walked even farther.

"Never really been a relationship person."

"Is that a nice way to say you are a player," Emma asked, looking up at him and he laughed.

"Relationships haven't really been my thing."

"So, what do you do with people you like?"

"We have fun."

"Fun? That's it?"

"Yes, what's the point of a label if it eventually spoils everything."

"I just feel you're afraid of commitment."

"No, I am not."

"You are."

"I just think love is overrated."

"No, it's not. You're just choosing not to see it for what it is."

Eric laughed "for what exactly? Making people delusional and causing them problems."

"Who hurt you?" Emma said and Eric smiled.

Emma knew there was something he wasn't telling are and she didn't want to probe him too much, unless he decided to tell her.

"It's just what I think though, now tell me about yours?"

"I am a lover girl, always been."

"My last relationship was about 3 years."

"That's longer than all my relationships have lasted combined," Eric said and they both laughed.

"So, what happened with you two?"

"He moved for college."

"Do you two still talk?"

"Yes, sometimes but not like we used to. I heard he has someone else now, she is in the same college as he is."

"See," Emma exclaimed.

Eric turned to see what she had been so excited about.

Emma moved towards the glass window of the shop, where their displays were. It was one of Eric's family shoe store.

Eric wondered why Emma had made them stop and moved towards her.

"What is it?"

"You don't like the shoes?"

"I love them, I have always loved them. This is my first time seeing this design though," Emma said as her face lit up.

She seemed genuinely excited about it and Eric couldn't help but notice.

"I have always wanted one since I was a kid."

"Did you get any?"

Emma turned to Eric "we couldn't afford one, was too expensive."

"Anytime I and mother would pass one of the shops, I would tell her but she always said we had so much bills to pay and no extra money."

Eric watched as Emma spoke. They have never really spoken about her childhood before.

"I understand her now actually, maybe one day when I save enough. I could buy one as a gift for myself."

"What about we get one now," Eric said and Emma looked at him, her eyes wide and her mouth rounded in surprise.

"I don't have that kind of money though."

"Don't bother, just come with me."

Emma walked behind Eric as he walked into the shop.

Emma was bursting with joy like an engorged leech. She grinned from ear to ear elated about what was about to happen.

She admired enthusiastically all the shoes on display as she entered the shop. She had never entered one. They looked even more beautiful up close.

Emma and Eric walked up to the man in charge of sales, he was standing by some pieces and checking them.

He turned as he noticed Eric. "Good day Sir, been a while."

"Hello, John. I need a pair of shoes."

"Which one sir?

Eric turned towards Emma "Can you make your pick."

"Are you serious!" Emma said, grinning wildly."
She felt a surge of happiness and her spirit brightened.

"Yes, Emma," Eric said, smiling. He was glad to see her that excited.

Emma picked one of the shows she had seen on display.

"Here," John said, handing the shoes over to Emma.

"Thank you," Emma said with a smile.

Eric and John spoke for a few minutes while Emma looked around the store admiring the shoes.

"Can we leave now,"

Emma turned to face Eric. "Sure."

"You seem to be very intrigued by the place. The main store is even more beautiful."

"Really?" Emma asked as they both walked out of the store.

"You seem very familiar with this place, even with John."

"Worked here?" Emma asked. Eric hesitated for a while, he didn't know why he didn't want to tell Emma who he was and how he was the son of one of the richest men in the city and they owns the biggest shoe brand.

He just likes how they both were and didn't want to change that for anything. For the first time, someone enjoyed his company just for who he was and not for what he or his family had.

"We make some supplies here, I am familiar with the family business," he lied and he really wished he didn't have to.

"Ohh, that's nice. Didn't know."

"It's very nice."
