Chapter 02: Help

M A R I E

I took a deep breath and sat up on the bench.

What's the use of living if I can't see the light. For as long as I can remember the only thing I can see is darkness surrounding me.

I don't even remember the face of Steve or even Irene. The last thing I saw was a chandelier dropping on me.

"These darn eyes!" I screamed, rubbing my eyes violently.

"Why won't you just open?!" I screamed out again, scratching my now red eyes, I presume.

"What is wrong with her?"

"Has she lost her mind?"

"What! Can't I just be in peace?!" I screamed out to whoever was talking.

"Listen you blind girl! If you wanted peace why didn't you stay in your mansion? Why do you continuously come to taint this park?!" Someone screamed.

I got up and streched out my cane and walked to  the direction of the noise, "Hey! Don't you-"

I got interrupted as I fell down and people burst into laughter.

"You became blind but you refused to stay in your house." Someone teased and continued laughing.

You think this is the life I wanted for myself?

My hands moved around the dirty floor searching my cane. My hands finally got the cane but I felt someone kick it off my hand.

"Do you feel pleasure being a bastard to a blind girl?" I scoffed but I heard nothing.

I sighed and crawled to the area where I heard a sound come from and searched with my hands for my cane.

I refuse to ask anybody here for help. I can do this on my own.

I searched for what seemed like forever but no luck.

"Snow?" I called out but there was no responding bark.

"Snow?" I called out again but still no responding bark.

I felt something grase my knee, I brought my hand and I could feel my cane.

Who could it be?

"Steve? Steve is that you?" I said aloud but nobody responded.

"Ma'am!" I heard Steve's voice call from a distance.

"Ma'am, are you fine?" Steve asked.

"I'm fine. Were you the ones that handed me my cane?" I questioned.

"No ma'am, I just got here." He replied.

He helped me up and took me back home. I relaxed on my bed as scenes of today played in my head.

Who was that person that helped me? Around why? Maybe he helped me just so I'd be indebted to him?

"Wake up Marielle!" I heard Irene's voice faintly call.

"What?" I replied sluggishly.

"You need to get ready for the event at Concept." She informed.

After Irene assisted me in getting ready, I made my way to the car. Steve was already there waiting for me.

I felt the car come to a halt and I imagined that we had arrived already.

I felt a palm rest on mind, "Are you sure you want to do this miss?"

"Don't ask me stupid questions." I faked smiled as I opened the car door.

Almost immediately, Steve stood next to me and I held his arm for support. We walked the red carpet into the main hall hearing whispers from a few people.

"Marielle!" I heard an irritating voice call out and then I began hearing steps.

Suddenly I felt someone engulf me in a hug and with the lack of emotions it held, I could tell that it was my aunt.

"I'm so glad you could make it!" She screamed enough for everyone to hear.

I scoffed, "Why did you have to put it on today's date?"

"Because today is a lucky day, Marie."

"It's Marielle to you."

"Whatever! It's time for you to give a speech."

"Why should I do that?"

"Don't forget that I am the director of Concept."

"Acting."

"Whatever."  She snorted before walking away.

"Come, let me take you to the stage." Steve offered.

"I'll go on my own." I insisted, taking my arm away from his grip.

"Don't be stubborn, Miss. Let's go." He instructed and took my arm again.

I stopped protesting and just let him walk me to the podium.

After delivering my speech, my aunt came up to me. "Great speech."

"Thanks." I replied and tried to walk away but an arm stopped me.

"Won't you stay for your my solo?" Nina taunted.

"Stay? If you haven't noticed, I'm seeing impaired! So let me go."

"Oh yeah. How do feel now that you're no longer the star of Concept? Knowing that Nina has now replaced you?" My aunt said on her daughter's behalf.

"Replaced? The only reason Nina is a star is because of my accident so why didn't Nina tell me instead, how it feels to always be second best?" I retorted.

I felt the grip loosen send I walked away from therev while Steve followed behind me. I stopped walking and paused.

"I want to go to the bathroom. Wait here."

"Do you still remember the way?"

"I've walked every part of Concept since I was seven, Steve."

I straightened my cane and made my way to the bathroom.

"So she really came? She's got guts."

"I wouldn't set foot here again if I was in her place after everything."

"It's like she's a string of bad luck. First her parents then her eyes then she lost the company to her aunt."

I ignored the comments, and closed the bathroom door behind me and it actually didn't water time for tears to come pouring down. The reason I hated coming here where the memories of my parents.

After I cried to my heart's content, I straightened my head and walked out of the restroom to the main entrance where Steve is supposed to get me.

As expected in a few seconds I felt Steve's presence as he held my arm and we both walked to the car.

The drive started off silent but then Steve broke the silence.

"The sun is really beautiful and it shines brightly too." He said.

"But I can't see it so what's the use"

"You will be able to see it soon too Marielle."

"Soon? How? Are you gonna give me your eyes?"

He stayed quiet, "I thought so." I commented again.

"You see Marielle, like the sun, I also want to see you shine. I want to see you shine brightly."

"That's enough Steve! Never speak to me like that again. All sentimental and all because that's not your job. Your job is to assist me that is all."

"I'm sorry Miss." He responded and it went quiet once again.

Everything was calm and silent until I felt the car moving weirdly.

"What is happening Steve?" I questioned.

"Everything is fine Marielle." He replied with panick in his voice only making me more scared.

The car was moving at very high speed and turning constantly, I held the car seat tighter and prayed silently for us to be safe.

"Steve! Steve!" I called out but I only heard his heavy breathing.

"Ste-" I tried to call but I felt the car crash into something strong. My whole body felt the impact. My whole body was in serious pain.

"Steve?"

No answer

"Steve?"

No answer

"Somebody help us!"  I called out for help weakly but nobody answered.
