Chapter 7

                                                                                                    The Other Sister

Years ago, when Lanie was only four years old she was abducted from her house when she was playing outside, her mom was in the house cooking dinner and had no idea she was kidnapped. Her mother came to call her in for dinner and watched her daughter get taken away, she tried to help get her back but only got her in the process, the assailant whacked her hard in the head with a baseball bat and fell down and was knocked unconscious. Poor Laney was dragged off by some tall, grayed haired creep driving a creepy eighties van that was all rusted out. Lacey fought, she bit, and kicked her kidnapper and tried to run away, he grabbed her by her hair and drug her and forced her into the van, and he sped off. The nosy neighbor across the street was watching everything from the window and wrote down the license plate she saw on the van and reported it to the police right away. Laney’s mother was rushed to the hospital and was in a coma, her father was at work and was notified by the police he rushed home and began searching for his beloved daughter, her sister Laurel who was a friend’s house came home in tears when she found out about her sister, a piece of her was missing and she felt it deep down inside, she was crushed. The police ran the license plate and found out that the man that owned the van is wanted and has been running for years, he holding up in a small house in downtown Boone which is a mountain town of North Carolina, he’s wanted for robbery, kidnapping, possession of a firearm and he is big leader of some group called Hardee Boys and he’s never been caught every time the police have tried he’s escaped every time. Laney was blindfolded and tied and was brought to some dumpy house that smelled so gross, she’d never forget the smell, he pushed forcefully into the house making her trip, she growled at him, but he ignored her, he took off her blindfold and untied her, Laney cried and screamed for her mother, but mean man just told her shut up. Laney just cried and cried till she cried herself to sleep. Her kidnapper eventually changed her name to Lacey and called her his own. Lanie didn’t understand why she was taken and why he wanted her around other than to his slave and to take of him because he obviously couldn’t take care of himself. Laney made the best of her situation and always cooperated when she was told something, she didn’t want the kidnapper to hurt or worse, when she complied it seemed to make him easier to deal with. There’s time she hated him because she would be with a sitter, she hated who was mean to her, and yelled at her, or cursed at her. She often wondered where he went for hours at a time. Life with this man wasn’t all bad. He let her have friends, go to school, and eventually when she got older, she could get a job. She even graduated high school and went to college and studied to be a fashion designer. Lanie is now in her twenties and she is working at a local designer clothing shop called Le Chique Boutique where she was a manager. She loved her job because she loves her job so much, and her boss was amazing to her and treated her like family. She had a huge crush on her boss, he was tall, brown hair, green eyes, sexy butt, and abs of steel. Lanie couldn’t help but to stare at him once in while he was the only thing that made her miserable life worthwhile, he made her day, he was kind to her, he was friendly, funny, smart, and so darn cute. She loved it when he didn’t shave and how manly and rugged he looked. She got so turned on. How could she work with him and not have feelings for him? It was hard to focus on her job when she was distracted by him. Lacey got up to go to work but made sure breakfast and coffee was made before she left for work in order to keep the peace with her “fake father, that’s the nickname Lanie uses for him, her father was particularly grumpy today for some reason asked if she got paid and deposited her check in his bank account, now Lacey didn’t think this was at all fair after she worked hard for her money and she should get it but she dared not argue or say anything about she just went along with it. She just said, “Yes father, I put it in the bank last Friday after work before it closed.'' He replied, “What a good girl you are, Lacey.” She hated that name Lacey and the fact that he called her mine. “I have to go now father, is there anything else I can get you before I leave, Lacey asked kindly? No dear, I’m fine. Thank you for my breakfast, he replied pleasantly. Lacey was shocked that he was so polite to her, normally he is a rude jerk. I’ll be home before dinner see you later, she yelled as she went the door.’’ Lacey left glad to get out of that dumpy little house and get some freedom for a while plus she couldn’t wait to see what Jackson was wearing today. She got into her little Honda Fit and drove off. Traffic was light, and she knew a shortcut to work that avoided the morning rush, she pulled into her spot hoping to see Jackson’s truck. Yep, he was here and was thrilled, nothing gets her through her day like he can. She took her keys out of the ignition and locked her car and headed in through the back door of the shop through the employee’s entrance, the shop smelled of coffee and donuts. Jackson came of his office looking all hot and sexy in his tight jeans, white shirt, and a Bolo tie, with his damn sexy cowboy boots. “Well hello Miss Green, how are you today, Jackson asked? I’m fine Mr. Mills how are you sir? Lacey replied. Mr. Mills is my father, please call me Jackson, and I’m well thank you Miss Green, Jackson retorted.” Okay Jackson, Lacey said with her head down acting all shy and embarrassed. “Would you care for some coffee and a donut? I bought your favorite, caramel, mocha latte and a crème filled donut. Thanks Jackson, that's sweet, I'm starving. You’re welcome, Jackson said.” “Would you like to come into my office and look over my fall line before I have it shipped to the store? I’d love to see what you’ve done, you have such a great eye for fashion, Lacey flirted. Why thank you Lacey, I think you do too. That's why I hired you for this job.” They went into his office together. Jackson pulls up a chair for Lacey next to him as they go over the fall line. “So, what do you think of Lacey, do you like it? '' Yes, you did an amazing job, everyone will like it. Since I have your seal of approval, I can now launch it, thanks for your opinion Lacey, Jackson said graciously, you’re very welcome Mr. Mills, I mean Jackson, Lacey answers blushing.” Lacey gets up from Jackson’s office and heads out the front and starts getting things ready to open, she dusts, cleans the windows, vacuums, organizes, and wipes down the counters. Today was going to be a big day. There was going to be a big sale and the shop got packed, everything was fifty-percent off. Lacey went to open the front doors of the shop and went back behind the counter behind the register. The was slow at first with customers here and there but mad rush was between 12-4pm. Customers came and went, and Lacey made sure everything went quickly and smoothly and kept the line moving. By the time the day was over Lacey was exhausted and it was after five, she took the shortcut home. Lacey turned into her drive and parked the car and went to make dinner. She unlocks the door and sits down on the table and pulls open the fridge, leftovers because it is the easiest meal tonight. She goes to watch tv before her father gets home, God only knows where he was, he never tells her anything and keeps her in the dark. Did he have a job, did he work, where did he go during the day, and why didn’t he tell her anything, Lanie often wandered to herself as she watched TV? Her father came home, in a mood and grumping and asking for his dinner so Lacey got up and made his dinner, then made hers, after they ate, she washed up the dishes and went to bed and dreamt of Jackson.
