Chapter 6

In the Control and Operations Center, Margaret was standing on a platform, while overlooking all the monitors. David was leaning back on the rails, while he looked bored out of his mind. Kyle was beside Margaret, holding a tablet, containing the files and reports from what they managed to scavenge from the original research of the Nighthowlers Program. Margaret glances over at David, before she walked over to him.

“After the experimental stage, did they take you anywhere else?” the director asked.

“Not that I’m aware of.” David turned to the monitors, where he saw the facility that he stayed in for almost half of his life. “But I saw the same personnel that monitored me ever since I was four years old. Same faces, same accents, and the same scent. Godawful scents.

“Anyone in particular stood out from the crowd?” Kyle walked over to the two of them.

“I don’t know his name, but he was the one who helped me wake up.” David shrugged. “Probably one of the doctors or the researchers of the experiment who grew a conscience.” Michael and the last of the Special Agents from the Elite team, Sarah Rockwell, entered the room, as they went over to the group.

Margaret frowned a bit. “Wake you up?” she felt confused. “Wake you up from what?

David stared at the floor, as he tried to recollect the fragment memories of his past during his escape. He felt chills through his arms from his shoulder, before remembering the brightness and heat of the sun shining down on him as he staggered. He shrugged once more. “I don’t know, but all I could remember that is was cold, but when I got out, I was in the middle of the fucking desert.

Michael stopped beside them, while Sarah stared at David. “He was placed in cryo sleep.” She reported, making the group turn to him. “How long were you in there?

“Again, I don’t know.” David grew irritated at the repetitive questions that he himself cannot answer.

Margaret sighed, before facing Kyle. “We have to work up a timeline.” The man gave a nod, before walking away from the group. She turned back to David, who started flinching, as he felt an aching pain on his head. “We’re done for today. You can head—” before Margaret could finish her sentence, David walked away from them, bumping Michael’s shoulder. The woman sighed once more, frustrated as she shook her head. “We have got to work on his manners.

“Give him a break, ma’am.” Michael gave a soft and apologetic look. “He might be experiencing flashbacks from a really horrible time in his life.

“Well, he is here to make our lives horrible, that’s one thing.” Kyle mumbled, as he stopped beside the group with the same expression of exasperation.

“Just give him some space.” Michael told him, before walking out. He ran after David, who was walking down the hallway, before he came up beside him. “Hey.” He greeted, but the man did not give him the same curtesy. “Listen, if you’re feeling any pain, you can always head over to—”

“What the hell is your fucking deal?” David snapped, as he pinned Michael to the wall. “I told you to leave me alone, didn’t I?” Michael could see the weary look in David’s eyes, as well as the frustration.

“Look, I’m only trying to—”

“Help. I know!” David pulled his hand back. “Just back off, alright? I’m already doing your bidding.” He said, before walking away from the man. Michael watched as David took the next turn, disappearing from the hallway. He looked down, feeling dejected.

David went inside his quarters, in time to wipe the blood from his nose. He went to the bathroom and stared at his own face from the mirror, before washing it down with water from the sink. He could see flashes off memories, even hearing voices in his head, before he shook it all off. He felt another pain from the side of his head, before taking a deep breath into calming himself down.
