Chapter 1

"Why on earth are you here again, hermano?" Treyson smiled at what his sister called him. Hermano, Spanish term for brother.

He's not the only one she calls that. All his brothers was addressed the same. And they'll know that she's being sweet when Yvonne was calling them that. And it ended being her endearment towards them. Well, except for her twin.

"Come here," he motioned her to sit beside him. The latter smiled at him and sat beside him.

"You're staring at the sunset again. And it's not the first time. You've been doing this for the past two weeks. Isn't it tiring?" Yvonne wanted to nag some more, but as much as she wanted to, she can see his brother struggling at something she can't put a finger on.

"Bare with me, I'll be out of here in three days time." Treyson out his arm around her sister's shoulder and put his head on hers. Treyson finds it sweet whenever she says that.

"Why's that?" Yvonne asked curiously.

"I just received an e-mail this morning saying that I'm now part of one of the country's largest architectural firm." There's a hint of pride in his voice.

"And that's what I'm expecting to hear. But it's too soon." Yvonne pouted. "Are you that excited to get out of here?"

"Don't worry. I'll be back here. I just need a time to myself and some experience. After that, I'll build my own firm." He explained. "And then, I'll settle here."

"Sounds promising." Yvonne finally smiled. "What's bothering you, anyway?" She pried, not wanting to but she have to. She's feeling a tug of worry in her heart seeing her brother.

Treyson smiled a sad smile. He turned his head towards the blazing, setting sun. the color of it is reflected on the sea, and the sea looks stunning in a sparkling blue-orange hues. But that doesn't alleviate his pain.

"I'm nursing my broken heart, little sis. But don't you worry, I'll be fine." He said reassuring. There's no point in concealing his pain.

"You'll be fine, but look at you." Yvonne tilted her head to look at him for a minute. "You always have this look on your face that it's as if you're looking for answers from afar. We're all worried about you, you know." Her voice is soft and full of concern. "Our brothers share a knowing look. They may not say it but they're all worrying about you."

"Don't worry about me. I'll be fin-"

"How can we not worry about you?" Yvonne raised her head and scowled at him. Her voice shoot up a tone higher, startling him and herself. "Sorry." She looked guilty.

Treyson can't help but smile. He reached to mess his sister's hair. His eyes was on his sister as he speak. Yvonne didn't bother to lean on him but rather, she look straight ahead.

"I'll be fine. Just give me some time." He smiled to ease his sister's irritated but worried expression.

"That's what Duke said." Yvonne whispered, feeling a bit ashamed of her yelling. "And after that, our brothers bombarded him with non-stop questions. And you know what they told me?" Now she sounds irritated again.

"What?" Treyson, suppressing his smile and amusement.

"They told me to go check up on you. And since I'm the Quintana's princess, you will tell me. Like seriously?" She huffed in frustration.

Treyson's suppressed smile turned into chuckle. They always do that whenever anyone of them looks troubled. They agreed that way since they considered Yvonne their Princess.

"Now you find me funny?" She even rolled her eyes. "Whoever that woman you broke your heart to, she's dumb not to even notice you." Yvonne said with irritation in her voice. "What's not to love about you anyway? You're sweet, kind and a loving brother. Not to mention the looks. You're the whole package."

Treyson laughed at what his sister said. What she said is true. But he can never said the same thing about himself.

"Thank you but maybe, there's always a first time for everything." Treyson turned his head towards the sun. "First love, first heartbreak. It's cool."

Yvonne was about to reply when they heard a commotion. And when they turn to look where it's coming, they find their brothers walking towards them.

"And here they are." Yvonne rolled her eyes and sit beside him properly.

Israel is holding another blanket. The others are just staring at them. But what caught his attention is, Duke is carrying the little girl in his arms.

That made him frown, ignoring the others.

"So, are you okay now?" North asked innocently as soon as they reached him.

"Nope. But soon." Treyson answered with his eyes glued on the little girl who's staring at the setting sun.

"How soon is soon, anyway?" Asked Nourvin. Treyson's gaze dropped on him for a moment.

"I don't honestly know." He looked down, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Let time decide for that." And he looked away.

"That's good enough to hear. Now, can we know what really happen to you?" Quade said with his all authoritative voice. And he knew better than to contradict his oldest brother.

Treyson looked far away, beyond the horizon where the sun seems to be kissing the sea.

"Long story short, I fell in love with the woman I can never have. And got my heart broken. The end." He said lifelessly. No one dared to speak for a minute. Only the crashing waves were to be heard. all eyes were on him, he can feel it on his skin.

But little did he know, a pair of astonishing eyes were bored on his back. And her ears were paying attention to him.

"What? That's it?" Adrione who first broke the silence. "No any other detail whatsoever?"

"No. There's nothing to say." Treyson shrugged. "I don't want to go over those details that broke my heart again."

They all sat down when Israel spread the blanket on the sand. The little girl on Duke's arms walk towards the shore.

They all share the same expression but when the girl stopped at her tracks just where the wave can touch her feet. They all breath a sigh of relief at that.

The little girl smiled an empty one when she faced the sea. She feels empty, anyway. Emptiness that the warmth her new-found family gives can't fill.

"Have she spoken?" Treyson asked no one in particular as his eyes never left the little girl.

"Not a word." Duke answered. "It makes Mom and Dad worry day by day."

"Have you tried talking to her?"

"Yeah. But as usual, she'll just stare at you or nod at what you're saying." Adrione answered this time.

"But we're not giving up. We will do all we can to make her talk." Israel sounds determined.

"We will. But if it'll make her uncomfortable, we will not push it." Quade will his usual authoritative voice. "What we need to do for now is to be her home. And that should be enough."

They all agreed at what the oldest have said. Forcing something to happen can only lead to more complications. So, let things unfold at their own time and pace.

"It's twilight. Let's all head back." Quade said as he got up. But their eyes all darted at the girl who's still staring at the sea.

"Little girl, let's go." Duke called out gently.

But to their stupefaction, the little girl just look at them and shake her head before staring at the sea again.

"Now, now. That's..." Yvonne lost her words. "What are we gonna do?"

"Go. We'll be right behind you." Treyson inquired gathering all eyes on him.

"Sure?" Quade sounded uncertain and worried.

"Yeah." Treyson simply replied. "Tell Mom and Dad we'll be in later."

"We'll go ahead then. But don't take too long, okay?" Quade reminded him. He just nodded and looked back at the little girl.

When the others we're gone, he sauntered towards the little girl.

Treyson watched her small frame tensed up when he stood beside her. He wanted to mess the girl's hair but opted not to. As his eyes didn't left the girl beside him, he saw how her small frame relaxed.

Her free-flowing hair is being swayed tenderly by the wind. Her eyes seem to glow at the light that illuminated them. But she remained put at her spot, uncaring about her surroundings.

They both stared at the sea quietly, just the crashing waves to be heard. And their feet are now being grazed by the waves. But they both don't care.

"You're cold." Said the girl beside him.

Treyson brusquely snapped his head towards the girl to make sure if what he heard was really her. When he saw her, he slowly released a breath assuming it was just his imagination. But what happened next made his jaw drop, flabbergasted.

"You're cold. Like me." And the little girl even meet his gaze. Her eyes held not a single emotion, nothing. It's empty.

Treyson is having a hard time grasping at what's happening. But he's beyond hundred percent that what he heard was her. He even blinked his eyes rapidly countless time.

"Did you just talk?" Was the sentence he formed coherently.

The girl just stare at him. Not confirming nor denying what he asked. But she didn't averted her gaze. And when Treyson noticed her eyes, all his thoughts dissolved into thin air. And all he cared about was the pair of astonishing eyes staring back at him.

Her eyes were big and bright, almost doe-like. But its the colors that's always leaving him breathless.

None of them averted, nor blink. Treyson didn't even realized that he's holding his breath as he battled the pair of eyes staring back at him. His lips are even parted as he stare at her.

The first one to look away was her. And when she did, she also walked away from him.

Treyson released the breath he's holding. And when he gathered his thoughts, he quickly run after the girl. He just stayed behind her. But when he remember her wounded soles, he abruptly but gently gathered her in his arms.

The girl didn't retaliate. But rather, she seem to be comfortable with him for she even carefully encircled her hands on his nape.

Tryeson find the gesture warm. But her words keep on ringing on his head until they reached home. And long after the night has fallen deep, he's drowned on his own thoughts. Most especially when her words ring on his head again.

"What does she even mean by that?" That question keeps on persistently ringing in his mind until he fell asleep.

FOR THE last three days, Treyson spend it with his family without thinking of anything. Pure joy and love and words of wisdom for him before he go. And now, as he put all his things on the car that will take him to the real world, his family is watching him earnestly.

And when he offered them a smile, Yvonne was the first one to break. She immediately run to him and hugged him tightly.

"Take care of yourself, hermano." She whispered, choking back her tears. "And come home to us, okay?

Treyson returned her hug for a brief moment and then held her at arms length.

"I promise I'll be home before you know it." Treyson smiled at her then wrapped his arms around her shoulders for a side hug and temple kiss.

Then his parents kiss him goodbye, his brothers just give him a man hug. And the last one to bid is the little girl Duke is holding.

"Be a good girl, okay." Treyson said smiling as he gather the girl in his arms for a bear hug. And to his surprise, the girl return his hug and is the first one to broke it. He feels warm with the hug even for a brief moment.

Her bright eyes gaze at him intently. And for the first time since she arrived at the Quintanas, she gave him a small smile then she nodded.

Treyson gaze at the girl tenderly. He gave him a smile but what the girl did next stunned him.

The little girl pressed her lips on his for a couple of seconds. Treyson looked at her, confused. Ignoring the fluttering feeling inside his stomach. The girl didn't lose her small smile.

"It's not wrong for the impossible to make it happen. But don't chase the impossible." She said quietly, not for everyone to hear. "You might miss millions of possibilities if you do that."

That was their parting words. And he can still hear her saying those words for every single day. And that was almost ten years ago.
