CONNECT THREE- 1

"And that's it for today. Remember, literature groups start presenting tomorrow. I'm mentioning that once again because I know some of you don't bother to listen to me during class. Ian, are you listening?"

Ian looked at the teacher. "Yes sir, tomorrow, presenting, lit." He grabbed his pencil to look focused.

Amy closed her eyes. She had a chemistry test tomorrow and she didn't want to think about a pointless literature presentation. She had nothing to go over, they were ready. No one was going to practice. There were other things on her mind.

"Are you doing the math homework?" Kai asked her. She opened her eyes.

"..No." She said.

He laughed.

Amy looked at him and then Ellie, and she quickly looked away.

They were done discussing. It was nothing anyway. A 3-5 minute presentation about the book they analyzed. Lit circles were nothing new to juniors in highschool.

But the group itself was something to Amy Feral. She was lucky she was paired with those two.

Ellie Marin had long, blonde hair that was straight and let down most of the time. Her eyes were grey, and her lashes were naturally long. She didn't need makeup, but she still wore it.

Amy thought she was the prettiest girl in the school.

Kai Halls was tan, tall, with curly black hair and green eyes. His eyebrows were naturally filled, and even though a lot of people didn't notice his beauty, Amy saw it.

Kai looked at Amy.

He wished he wasn't so awkward around her.

"Every time I talk to her I feel stupid. I hate myself for it. Let me leave her alone for today.." He thought.

Ellie looked at her phone. Her boyfriend Devin messaged her.

"Ellie, can we go to Mcdonalds today?"

"pleaseee"

She rolled her eyes a bit.

"Sure. I could use some icecream."

"yaaay i love you"

The bell rang and everyone got up to leave the classroom. Ellie saw Amy glance at her, then she reverted her eyes. Ellie half smiled at her.

Kai went to his locker to get his jacket. He saw the weird group of nerdy kids talking. Most kids bullied them but Kai didn't care about them. They mind their own business and that's all that matters.

Amy laid down on her bed. She took a break from chemistry and went on her phone. Kai was online at the same time. And Ellie.

"I wish Ellie followed me back. I'm not going to ask for that though because that would be weird.. whatever."

Amy got a notification.

Kai- 6:05 pm

"Hey"

Amy- 6:06 pm

"Hi"

Amy was really bad at making friends, but at least Kai always talked to her first, so she didn't feel weird talking to him.

Kai- 6:07 pm

"Wyd"

Amy- 6:07 pm

"Studying"

Kai- 6:08 pm

"You can study while you're on your phone? wow"

Amy- 6:08 pm

"Okay fine if we're being honest, I took a break"

"Lol"

Kai- 6:09 pm

"i just finished the math"

"it was so eas

Kai backspaced. He didn't want to seem egotistical.

Amy- 6:09 pm

"same but i didnt check my answers"

Kai- 6:10 pm

"Its prob all right"

"ur smart"

She smiled.

Amy- 6:10 pm

"I doubt that."

"Anyways do u follow Ellie on ig"

Kai 6:11 pm

"yeah why"

she sighed.

I'm not going to ask Kai if she follows back.. that's so dumb. I'd humiliate myself if he asked Ellie to follow me for me.

But It would get them to talk to eachother. Yes, I'm stupid for shipping two of my classmates together. But I have a dream. A dream that we'd all be best friends. I'd be friends with a boy for the first time in my life without having a crush on him, and I'd be best friends with the prettiest and popular girl in the school. I'd be like everyone else. I'd fit in. Then I wouldn't be seen as a loner or a weirdo. And people would like me. Besides, Ellie and Kai would be the cutest couple. And Devin is gross.

Amy- 6:13 pm

"Nvm"

"i gtg bye"

She put her phone down and looked at her textbook.

"Stupid Chemistry. I have other things to think about."

"So, Amy," Her mom asked at the dinner table, "How was school?"

Amy picked at her food. "I'm just stressed about tomorrow's Chemistry test."

"You didn't study for it?"

"I did but, my teacher is unpredictable so.. I don't know."

Her mom ate the food and looked back at Amy.

"You know, it's been a while since you've started the new semester."

"Yeah.."

"Well, have you met anyone new? Someone you haven't had classes with before?"

Amy knew what she was getting at.

"Um some people. I don't talk much though. I just take notes in class and sleep."

Her mom nodded. "You haven't made any friends?"

Amy sighed. "I don't talk to anyone first."

"You know, people always think that the same thing that happened to them once will happen again but, you can't think like that if you want to change your life. Talk to people Amy. Let them into your life. They won't hurt you."

Amy didn't say anything back. She looked at the empty chairs next to them. Amy wished that she had a sibling. Things have been lonely ever since her parents got divorced two years ago. That's why she was desperate to be friends with Kai and Ellie.

When you're too scared to act on your wishes, you think instead. You keep thinking and you convince yourself that that is how your life is supposed to be, but you don't make it happen. You wait for it to happen.

Amy left to go to bed.
