CHAPTER 8

After planning Mady's birthday on the cafe the other day, the two of us, Marco and I, became busy on our work. I just recently found a mindblowing information about Morris. I was reading the hard copy of Gio's work then I saw that he was on the orphanage three days before the massacre happened. It was stated that the Javers are one of the sponsor of our orphanage, Vasquez Homes, and Morris was the one who's in charge on dealing with my parents together with their mother. While I was re-reading it, I noticed something. There is something missing and I couldn't pinpoint what's missing.

I was about to message Gio when he messaged me first.

From: Gio

Hey. Are you free on Saturday?

I turned to look on the calendar placed on my bedside table to check if I will have appointments on that day then I realized that it was my parents' death anniversary. It's been three years since they died and until now, we haven't had the justice we wanted.

To: Gio

I'm sorry, G :( I have to give my report to Mr. Perez then will go straight to the orphanage after that.

He did not replied after that so I guess he knew my reason.

I placed back the hard copy of the newspaper containing Morris' profile on the envelope before facing my MacBook to continue writing report regarding to my task that I will pass on Saturday.

As I was writing my report, I realized that it has been three weeks since Marco and I met and we will soon part ways.

The next morning, today is Friday and I went straight to Marco's office. I have to inform him that I will not be present tomorrow as I will stay on the orphanage for the whole day.

"Good morning, Miss Vasquez. You're early today," I smiled on his secretary when she saw me entering the elevator.

"Good morning as well!" I greeted back, "There was no traffic on my way here."

"Mr. Javier was not yet here but you can already go inside," she said as she opened the door of his office for me. I thanked her afterwards before going in.

She's right, Marco is not yet still here. Maybe I was really early this time. I just placed my stuffs on the coffee table before going on to his shelf. Ever since the first day I went here, I haven't roamed on his office. As I was brushing the tip of my finger on the books on his shelf, something caught my attention. It is an old newspaper stocked in between two books. I took it out to see what was the newspaper is all about.

As soon as I unfolded it, my brows furrowed as I see the headline.

"SENATOR HERMOSA ARRESTED FOR HAVING NUMEROUS ILLEGAL TRANSACTIONS."

My heart skipped a beat as I saw the headline that is very familiar to me. The headline that once almost become a threat to my life. My hands are trembling in fear for what I've experienced at a young age.

"Hey, you're early."

I immediately hid the news paper behind my back when I saw Marco coming in. I inhaled a huge amount of air before smiling at him.

"Uh... Yeah?" I answered before going back to the couch while still holding the newspaper I found on his shelf.

"Hn," he placed his briefcase on his table before removing his coat then he hung it on his rack. "Have you had your breakfast already?"

I shook my head as my answer before placing the newspaper inside my bag. And it is a good thing that he didn't noticed that I was holding something awhile ago. "By the way, I won't be present tomorrow." I said as I takes out my MacBook.

"For what reason?" He asked while taking out a cup of instant noodles from the cupboard.

"I will pay a visit on the orphanage my parents once managed before," I said then I began looking for the Morris profile since I have a feeling that Senator Hermosa was related with him.

"I won't be here tomorrow as well." he shrugged as he pours a hot water on his cup. "I was about to ask you to come with me tomorrow but I guess it's urgent."

The day passed by quickly and today is now Saturday. I was up early so I could arrive on the orphanage before lunch. The orphanage is still functioning since the partners and sponsors of my late parents decided to keep the orphanage going and of course, I agreed. Since I know that there were plenty of homeless kids that needs shelter to live in.

"Good morning, Mr. Perez." I greeted as soon as I entered his room. I went straight to his table where he was sitting, "I won't stay for long since I have to be on the orphanage by 11 or earlier." I said as I handed him the brown envelope.

"How was things going on your investigation?" he asked while scanning the papers.

"I already have a lead... I think." I said before looking on my wrist watch. "I'm not yet sure but hopefully this could lead me to the truth. I have to go, just send me an email." I added before leaving his office then I started to book an Uber while I was on my way out.

"Athena!"

I looked around then saw Gio approaching me. I smiled at him as I wave my right hand, "Hey!"

"Are you now on your way to the orphanage?" He asked as he started walking beside me.

"Yes, why?"

"Want me to give you a ride?" he asked and I was about to answer him when I successfully booked one.

So I showed him my phone before saying, "I'm sorry but I already booked one." I said before I entered the elevator.

It was exactly 10:00 A.M. when I arrived on the orphanage. I was welcomed with a huge hug from the kids whom I always visit every last Sunday of the month.

"Athena!"

"We missed you!"

"I missed you too," I said as I hugged them back before carrying Sarah, the three year-old kid who just recently came to the orphanage. Her mother asked us to take care of her as she was ill. She won't stay any longer so she decided to take her over.

We were busy catching up while we were sitting on a bench under the balete tree as I was braiding Sarah's long hair. And in the middle of catching up, Alexa stood up then she ran over the gate so I panicked a little.

"Marco!" I heard her screamed.

Marco? He's here?
