The Grass is Always Greener

James Carter refused to believe this truth. He couldn't accept that all of this was his doing.

"You're lying, aren't you?!" James tightly grasped the doctor's neck, pulling her close to his face.

The doctor, filled with fear, faced the furious man. "Sir... what I said is true," she stammered.

James suddenly pushed the doctor away, nearly causing her to fall over if not for a colleague catching her.

James couldn't face this reality. He shook his head, his gaze unfocused, until the operation room doors opened, and Lily, pale and lifeless, was wheeled out. Only then did he approach.

Lily was lying with her eyes closed, lifeless as if dead.

James panicked, "Lily, how are you? Don't scare me, please."

"The patient is very weak and needs rest. Please don't disturb her," the nurse said as she wheeled Lily towards her room.

James had no choice but to silently follow.

Back in the room, after the nurse settled Lily and gave some instructions, she left.

James looked at the sleeping Lily, at a loss. He never intended to hurt her, but he couldn't control himself.

At that moment, Chris Cloud walked in. "Sir, the delegation from France has arrived."

If it weren't for something important, Chris would never disturb James.

James needed a reason to leave; he didn't know how to face Lily when she woke up or how to tell her that because of him, she might never become a mother.

He desperately wanted to escape.

"Arrange someone to take care of my wife," he said before hastily leaving.

"Yes, sir," Chris replied and followed him out.

Shortly after their departure, Emma Wilson entered the room.

Seeing Lily on the bed, a cunning smile crossed Emma's face.

She had hired a private detective to monitor Lily and James's every move, so she knew exactly why Lily was there.

"It's better if she can't get pregnant ever again. Eventually, the Carter family will surely cast her out. Then, when I cunningly conceive James's child, won't I become Mrs. Carter?"

Emma laughed wildly, "Lily, let's see how you compete with me now. The position of Mrs. Carter will soon change hands."

Emma left without another glance at Lily.

Outside the room, she called Mark Johnson, "Mark, Lily is in the First People's Hospital. Hurry up and come here."

In less than half an hour, Mark hurried in, carrying a thermos.

On the phone, Emma had already told him everything. To make the act convincing, he brought chicken soup prepared by the household staff.

"Emma, I'm here," Mark called out to her as he approached.

"Lily hasn't woken up yet."

"I'll go in and have a look." Mark was curious about Lily's condition and, remembering her attractive figure from their last encounter, he regretted not having succeeded. He still thought about it.

Emma, aware of his thoughts, mused. After all, which man isn't looking at the pot while eating from the bowl, especially when there's nothing to eat in the bowl yet?
