Chapter XIV

Bruce and I excused ourselves and walked outside to have a talk as he hugged me from behind still covering me with his coat as I took his hands from my waist and clapped with them. I felt him lower his head to my left shoulder and kiss my cheek.

"Do you think my brother's going to be okay?"

"Yeah, I think so, I was taken aback when I saw him like that, but now that I think about he's not the only one."

"What do you mean?"

"You know how we've all been hanging out?"

"Yeah."

"I've been talking to Sam too when your friend Judith brings him along and he said that his older brother has been doing."

"Similar in what way?"

"Yeah, Zoning out as if he saw something that triggered something else. He say's that since his brother came home from the war he's been screaming in bed and hasn't' slept well in days. He says that he sometimes screams at night and is always jumpy ready to fight for some reason."

At the thought of Peter suffering, my eyes started to water as I felt my heart drop as I held his hands as tight as I could. Bruce turned me around with the biggest smile I've ever seen. Then he wiped my cheeks as tears began to fall. He kissed me on the forehead, pulling me close into an embrace, rubbing my back as I hugged him, linking my fingers together. I could feel his kiss on my head as he placed his hand over my head making me press my face into his chest. I cried as he exhaled and held me tightly still patting my back.

"It's Okay. Peter isn't like that he's okay instead give him support that's what he needs right now."

I took a deep breath and looked up at him and his smiling face. He placed his hand under my chin, pushing my head up until our foreheads were touching.

"I think we've left him alone with Linda long enough lets go see how he's doing."

I smiled at him nodding as he smiled and continued to wipe away the tears from my cheeks. We walked towards them, she and Peter were sitting on a bench with his hand behind Linda's head. He was playing with her other hand in his lap, tapping his foot as they looked up at the ceiling.

"Peter?"

He flinched but just took a deep breath as he looked up at me with a smile.

"Hey, Donna are you okay I know I scared you."

Bruce let me go from his embrace as I nodded and walked over to sit next to Peter and Linda.

"I'm okay, I'm just worried about you. Its not the first time I saw you do that."

"I know, I remember that day of the fire's, there were so many. During my training, the leads would inform us to be prepared to go on and do rescue missions from time to time. Turns out, that there was a large group of Jew's living not too far from our training site that had found a way to lock themselves in a building for months. The only once allowed to leave were the adults who would wear all black, blending in with there surroundings. I'm guessing, so they would not be caught as they did their night outings. On the day we were commissioned to help, the building was bombed and as we approached it all I saw was fire and multiple people coming out coughing from the smoke. There were so many children and woman being carried out by the men. Only three of the five kids survived! one of them had to have his little arm amputated the other two have severe burns... one on his legs and the other on his chest and left arm. I didn't know what to do this..."

He let go of Linda as he placed his hands in his lap and started crying. Linda just hugged him as she too started crying and all I could do was hug him back as I cried. Bruce took a step toward us and stood behind him patting him on the back.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He lifted his head up as Linda started wiping the tears from his face as he smiled at her and me. I just sat there not knowing what to do but then what was there really for me to do? I hadn't gone with him or seen what he saw. I was too scared to ask for more. He smiled taking Linda's hand giving it a kiss then he stood up to jokingly punch Bruce in the chest. Bruce placed his hand on his chest taking two steps back pretending to fall.

"Let's go get some dessert. How about Ice-cream?"

Bruce and I looked at each other and nodded as Linda smiled. Peter placed his hand around her and she hugged him by the side tightly.

"We should go to our house, we have Ice- cream there and I remember that dad said that they were getting something delivered I'm curious to see what it was."

I walked toward Bruce as he used his right hand to call me over into an embrace. As Bruce and I walked towards his car, I watched as Peter open the door of his car for Linda. Kissing her in the forehead as she sat down. Peter started trotting around the car as he got in himself. I felt a pat on my shoulder, it was Bruce of course, holding the door open for me. He gave me a kiss in the forehead as I got inside and sat down. And just like that, the sunlight seemed to diminished as he switched the key over and started the engine. The moonlight took over the road on the way home, as I held on to Bruce's hand as he drove on ahead.

"I wonder it your mom cooked her tuna salad again."

I laughed slightly at his comment, since I knew she had been making it for some time now. Mom loved the fact that he could eat. and since it remains being Peter and my favorite, she cooks it often.

Bruce looked at me as he parked the car behind Peter's and smiled as he held my hand bring it close to his face giving it a kiss.

"You're exited?"

"Yes! I love food."

I started laughing as he let go of my hand and we got out of the car. Before we could even reach the door, those two knuckleheads, Peter and Bruce, yelled food as they trotted through the door.

"Because I'm sweet on candy and candy's sweet on me... I wish their there were four of her so I could love more of her... she has taken my complete heart..."

Our parents were just dancing around in the center of the living room as we entered.

"Candy, ….. because I'm sweet on candy... It's gonna be just dandy the day I take my candy.."

My dad walked towards me and twirled me in to a dance as Bruce took my mom and Linda and Peter. Before we knew it, that song had ended and another began to play. Jo Stafford's hit. Bruce and I took a twirl as my dad took Linda's hand and Peter mother's.

"See the Pyramids along the Nile... Just remember, darling, all the while you belong with me... See the jungle when its wet with rain..."

Bruce pressed his cheek close to mine as my dad twirled Linda into Peter's arms making her laugh. Mother took father's hand and walked into the kitchen to prepare the table so we could sit and eat.
