Chapter VII

"So? What happened? I mean I left you to speak to him and now your silent?"

I took a breath as I looked out the window as we stopped at a red light and because I didn't answer right away, Peter tapped on my knee.

"I walked and talked with him, he doesn't seem bad and your right he is quite young, so I understand what you mean."

"Yeah, that's what I'm saying but, Donna?"

"Yeah?"

"Why did you even turn red in general?"

"I don't know, I guess his swagger worked."

"Still works?"

He put his foot on the gas and drove once the light went green. He than looked at me from the corner of his eye as I turned from the window to look at him.

"I don't know, it might still work who knows? Let me get a new friend. I mean it might be nothing, than again it might be something."

He blew out a chunk of air and filled than he re-inflated his cheeks. I smiled at him, than extended my hands out to him, slapping the air out. We laughed and turned the volume of the music in the car up. I smiled at him tilting my head and pushed his nose up with my index finger. He opened his jaw tilting his head trying to bite my finger as I quickly pulled it away falling back on the seat laughing. He pressed the break hard making the driver in front of us honk his horn. The driver stuck out his middle finger threw the window as we just laughed at him and continued on our way.

"You see, this is what happens when you start playing like a child when I'm driving."

I just stuck my Tongue out at him and smiled as he pointed at a store to his left. I stretched myself and looked at it as he turned making me fall back as he laughed.

"They sell shoes here would you like a new pair or something?"

I just smiled at him and moved my head from one side to the other making him frown at me pressing his eyebrows together.

"Come on I've wanted to buy you something since I came back. I have money now and I can afford to do so let me."

"NO its okay! As a matter of fact, I feel bad about what you said yesterday and I want to show you something. I should have sent them, better yet, given them to you already back but I didn't. So, let me do so now."

He just glared letting out a sigh and checked the rearview mirrors before entering traffic all over again.

"This better be good."

I smiled at him and nodded with excitement as he drove to the direction of our house. I turned the music up and watched as people still danced around threw the window. Everyone was still so happy showing public signs of affection, all throughout the streets and I felt happy too. As I looked at Peter driving us, I smiled with my eyes closed as we passed through the neighborhood. Silence came upon us as we heard a woman scream. She was on the side of the road next to a yellow house that was being engulfed with flames. Peter turned the wheel and came to a hard stop; jumping out the car before I could even take the seatbelt off.

"Peter!"

I jumped out and grabbed his arm before he could run inside to help. Just then he looked at me then pointed at the burning house. The Firefighter's came in and parked behind us. They each took a hose and started diminishing the fire as some went inside to take people out. Peter quickly pushed my hand down until I wasn't holding on to him anymore.

"It's okay let me help."

I took a step forward and turned facing him as the fire man passed by running with hose. The water took control until there was nothing but smoke coming out. I felt him relax a bit; it was at that moment I turned to see a fireman bring out a young lady caring a baby covered whit a blanket. The fire man walked with her until they stood by the ambulance and uncovered her to show a baby in her arms. The baby seemed fine no signs that the fire gotten to him as he cried and cried. Peter relaxed a bit more and tried to take a step forward but instead he just stood there looking at her and the baby and started shaking. His hands opened and closed as his eyes opened wide, he took deep breaths as he stood there looking at them until he fell back into the car and opened his mouth to let go of air that I didn't even see him take in. He looked down at the ground then at me placing his hands on my shoulders, gripping them tightly.

"Peter! It hurts.."

He closed his eyes as tears ran down, after a moment, he finally looked at me in the eyes and pulled me in for a hug. He started crying nostop holding me tighter and tighter. I pushed my head up into his right shoulder as I hugged him back and took a breath as I got closer to his ear.

"Peter, I don't know what's going on but I can't breath your... Holding me too tight..."

He relaxed his grip as I opened the passenger door and let him inside taking the keys from him. The fireman were still taking people out as the people in the ambulance helped the girl and her baby. I could see another fire man looking at us concerned as I then smiled at him closing the passenger door and walked around the car. The fire man ran towards the others once I started the car up again and drove off. I could see them still looking at us through the rearview mirror. We drove in silence as he just sat there without emotion not faced by anything; just resumed blank stare for the rest of the ride home.
